I am on minocycline and rifampin right now and I am having trouble with retaining fluid. I gained 5 lbs in the past 4 days, and 20lbs since I started the meds in July. I am pretty sure it is the rifamipin and not the mino causing most of the problems. I am on throid meds, so I know my thyroid is part of the problem also.

Anybody else have this experience or any ideas on how I can mediate this side effect.

I would take a guess that Rifampin is reducing the effects of your thyroid meds. It interacts with just about everything, thyroid meds and steroids to name two. Are you Hypo or Hyperthyroid? What dose of Rif are you taking? You should be able to check it with a bl test.

Yes, Rifampin can reduce the amount of thyoid in your blood. So that is one possibility.

While on both Rifampin and doxycycline I had swelling in my lymph system from so much die off. I never weighed myself, so I don't know if my weight increased, but you could see that my feet, knees, and neck swelled. There was generalized swelling as well. I don't know if this could be part of what is happening for you?

If it is lymph issues, very gentle massage, walking, if possible, warm baths, and making sure your bowels are functioning well are helpful. Also, drinking plenty of good water.Dry brush massage is another possibility. Try googling it.

I guess I should have mentioned that I am hypothyroid, with an autoimmune cause most likely ( i have high anti-thyroglobulin antibodies). I am on 300 mg rif every other day right now- I am not tolerating it well.

I understand that pulsing rifampin, taking it every other day, is going to make it more likely to cause negative effects. They talk about it causing a flu like sydrome as the blood levels drop.

Do you need to take Rifampin? Maybe there is something else that you would do better with.
