I am on IV meds; this is my fourth relapse, I have been on Roceph. and Doxi for 8 weeks, my MD wants me on it considerably longer; but my line ; Groshong got infected. It was really terrible; I have to have a new line put in any feelings about a Hickman or a Port; I really love to get in the water to exercise my joints; it was impossible with the Groshong; what are peoples' experience with central lines??

Hi 4lyme,

Sorry you had a line infection. I have thankfully never had one (*knock on wood*) but a good friend of mine has had two major ones and they were awful for her.

As for IV lines, I have a port-a-cath and I have to say I absolutely love it (as strange as that sounds). I had it put in a year and a half ago and I've been on and off IV treatment since then, but it's stayed in the whole time. When it's not being used for regular infusions, it requires a monthly flush.

Here is a good older thread where I answered a lot of questions about ports:

And another post with info about ports vs. other IV lines:

I hope that helps you. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I'm pretty knowledgable about ports since I've had mine for so long and I can probably answer your questions or direct you to where you can find the answer.

Peace and healing,
Annie

I've had my port for over three years....I had a PICC for four months at an earlier date. The port wins hands dowm!!! It is the least likely to get infected and it can be kept for ? a long long time as long it is taken care of as recommended.
