Hello, this is a question regarding female lymies:
I take a prescription hormone (progesterone) which helps my mood and sleep tremendously. When I became very ill with lyme, I had no period for a year (I am 32) and the progesterone re-established my cycle.
Does anyone happen to know what type of impact the abx might have on the hormone I take? Should I be adjusting the dosage I wonder?
I am now am in my sixth month of abx treatment (after 20 years of illness....yes, took that long to get tested for borrelia...*sigh*).
Many thanks for any replies, santa_pax

Abx definitely combine oddly with birth control hormones, they diminish the effectiveness for birth control.
However, I've never thougth about how they effect hormone replacement therapy. I'm on compounded estrogen and compounded progesterone, so would be curious.
My endo changes dosages depending on how my body is responding. If it lessens then we increase the hormones. The estrogen is in liquid form, so I take one more or less drop depending on my day...
I hope this is somewhat helpful! Carol Ann

Since the LLMD I was seeing at the time totally believes that hormones and LD should be treated together, I believe that taking the two together would not effect you LD treatment.
While taking hormones and abx at the same time may reduce the effect of one or the other, I'd suggest that you talk to you doctor about the significance.

I know that rifampin decreases the effects of Progesterone.
What drug(s) may interact with progesterone? *barbiturate medicines for inducing sleep or treating seizures (convulsions) *bromocriptine *carbamazepine *ketoconazole *phenytoin *rifampin *voriconazole
Wow many thanks for the input breathwork, rose, robi, and tree, yes indeed the info does help.
I am taking amoxil plus azithromycin at this point. If abx can reduce the efficacy of The Pill they must have an impact on HRT. I kind of doubt my LLMD will know about progesterone but I will ask. (Its the compounded kind like you use, breathwork.... the dose varies according to the day of the cycle).
