Hi all,

Plans are to take me off IV Rocephin next Wednesday after 6 weeks of treatment for chronic lyme. Picc will come out on Thursday.

I have to start a new job on the following Monday, which means I have to fly out of town for a full week of orientation away from home.

I know my doc plans on putting me on abx orals after next Wednesday.

Question? Am I better off waiting to start the orals until I get back from the week away, or start on them immediately next week?

I fear NOT taking them could cause a herx while I'm away..........and fear NOT TAKING them could cause a herx while I am away. Not sure what to do???

Also, I'm a bit nervous traveling alone, away from home for a week, on a new oral abx drug as I don't know what side effects or symptoms it might escalate?

I've never been on orals so no prior experience as to the effect they might have on me.

Your recommendations/suggestions are truly welcome!!!! Thanks [bow]

ttph,
i don't know what i'd do in your case. can't offer advice, except to try to take it as easy as possible whenever that's available, i.e. rest for a couple of minutes in between meetings, don't go out with others if you can grab some rest, etc.

i'm sure someone will offer advice.

congrats on finishing iv tx and getting ready for the next round of atx!!

good luck [Cool]

My doctor at the time, who didn't know much of anything on treating Lyme, started me on orals before taking me off the Rocephin. That way there was no break in treatment.

Have no idea if that was the thing to do, but 2 1/2 months of Rocephin did not cure me.

Hi,

As Monica says, it's has been found to be best to take at least flagyl during IV treatment and then add in an oral toward the end of IV treatment.

The belief these days is that IV sends the spirochetes in to their cystic form that abx cannot kill. When the coast is clear (of abx) the spirochetes come out of their "bubble" and are just fine.

Flagyl has shown the ability to bust up the cysts so that the IV can kill more chetes. Adding in a 2nd abx at the end of IV hits them from another angle.

I am not a doctor. This is just what I've read and heard from doctors, studies, books and from this site.

Given all that, I'm thinking that you should start the oral abx as soon as possible. If you let all the cysts return to spirochetal form and then hit them with the orals, you may be setting yourself up for big time herx later.

Also, if you start herxing and it's too much, you can always back off the orals.

Good Luck with the new position.

Corgilla

Thanks for your caring and suggestions.

I'm just scared as I have to be "on the ball" the whole following week. Just like many of you......pretending to be ok when it's necessary. [dizzy]
