Greetings from the land of slow recovery, I have been on doxy 300mg for 5 weeks. Added biaxin 1000mg two wks ago.
I am going to AZ with family in 14 days. (I'm not sure if I'm up to it but was planned before dx w/lyme.
Husb says I can stay in hotel all day if I want. To avoid sun poisioning, should I ask ld to switch to amoxicillin. He told me that tetra is the one most like doxy but I would herx in 10 days...What about amox?
Any advice or stay on doxy and out of sun?

The sun can be really harsh when you're on Doxy. I had a lot of sun issues with doxy. I am now on minocycline and have no problem with the sun....but keep in mind everyone is different.
The herx when I started mino was huge .... so I am not sure you want to switch right before vacation.
Amoxicillin is in the penecillin family and is used for lyme. Mino and doxy are in the tetracycline family ......... so if you went from doxy to amox you'd be switching the class of antibiotic you are taking.
Of cousre your LLMD should be able to advise you. I would call ASAP as you should switch before you're ready to leave as you may have a big herx or reaction to the new drug. Plan ahead!
Wish I was going to AZ ..... I used to live in NM and I LOVE the desert.

I had sun poising real bad on doxi -Lite from my computer burned the skin on my Face-- Im not kidding --
I figured out why -- then it went away---
Cranbarries also cause this reaction ---
Do a Google on Photo Toxic -- (sun poising)

I recommend a hat & scarf! Also stay in during the day and go out at night. If you do go outside seek shade. Use sunblock if you can. (I became sensitive to it after I got Lyme and had to stop using it).

Hiya Human.
Oh, I just can't say enough about the pain of Doxy plus even a little sun.
There is not much getting around it.
I used to fry just driving in the car from the sun coming in the window. I could feel my skin burning.
I also live in a place that's sometimes the hottest place in the country (Redding, California). Sunscreen helped, but didn't prevent burns that made my nerves scream with pain, even before the burn SHOWED on the outside.
I refused to give up fishing last summer while on Doxy, and donned a huge old lady church hat, long sleeves, and "glacier gloves,' trying to fish just in the shade. However, the gloves had the fingertips out (to strip fly line). Though slathered in SPF 9000, I still burned through my fingernails. My hands and fingers swelled like sausages, went numb, then were excruciating.
Hope you can get switched to something else if there's any chance of exposure because it is not pretty and will make you very sick.

My ld wanted me to switche to teta but warned of the 10 day herx...yikes.. I would be in AZ.
So what if I keep on the biaxin but stop the doxy for the week?
Thoughts...I will ask dr. p if this is an option...
hats and scarfs-thanks but I'm trying to get out of the depressing cold here in ct...don't want to bring my hat!!! Will have to if still on doxy (maybe a cutewide brim garden hat, white gloves and a big white sheer scarf...with huge sunglasses (I will look like Jackie O!)

According to a well-respectd LLMD I saw briefly, sunscreen does not help in sun sensitivity from doxy. He sugested taking PABA. It is included in some vitamins but he said to take it in a larger dose.
I think you'd be able to find it at a health food store locally. I would start right away!
If you decide to stay on the doxy you might want to reconsider on the hat. You will wish you had it!!

I did doxy for a few weeks years ago. I could not even go outside if it wasn't totally cloudy, I was so sun sensitive. Sunscreen didn't help. Even covering up completely I felt buuurning through the fabric. The burning wasn't the same kind of feeling as regular sunburn.
I got burnt under my fingernails the first week, before I realized the problems with doxy and the sun and I was in Canada!

I was cavalier at first about doxy and sun. Bad idea. Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I live in FL...got a wide-brimmed hat and didn't let my skin see the sun and was absolutely fine.

hey humanbeing- I'd say the outfit you describe would make you look like hatsnscarfs!
No I wasn't suggesting a winter hat but something with a wide brim & suitable for hot weather.
I've found my Jackie O get-up makes people think I'm either eccentric, famous or mysterious. It's kind of fun and people stop me on the street all the time to compliment my hat (I have several that get frequent compliments.
I have several large cotton scarfs (shawls) that I wrap around to cover my next and also use to cover my hands when it is too warm for gloves.
I learned early on in my doxy days that I could get a burn just crossing the street without a hat & scarf. Be careful, pretend you're a movie star. hats
