Ok so I had an allergic reaction to IV vancomycin.
Now I have this terrible rash all over my body. Has
anyone ever had a rash like this? What works best to
get it to go away? I have taken benadryl but that
just makes me loopy and out of it. I can't handle
the itch anymore!! UGH

ive heard epsom salt baths help. I think benadryl makes a cream that you can apply to the rash. How about a Aveno oatmeal bath. I know that helped when i had chicken pox.
hopefully others will be around later and will post.
Oh and drink water...lots of water.

If the epson doesn't work i have used caladril lotion.

SARNA anti-itch lotion was fantastic for me.
Please be very careful with your allergy. I had an allergy to IV claforan. I went to the ER 3 times, before the diagnosis. They gave me benadryl and sent me home.
That night, THANK GOD, my husband (who is an MD) saw my "rash" and was very alarmed. He stated that I needed to go to the allergist ASAP, IMMEDIATELY, because this was not a normal rash. this would NOT respond to benadryl.
Initially, I ignored him. I was so tired of the whole thing. But, I went, and when the allergist saw me, he confirmed my husband's statement.
I had a rare allergy called STEVENS JOHNSON SYNDROME, which does not respond to benadryl, and can kill you, as it leads to internal blistering. I already had blisters in the back of my mouth.
I am not trying to alarm anyone. This is rare. But, it did happen to me, and i have NEVER had an allergy to ANYTHING! So, if your rash ever turns to a flush, vein-like appearance, wiht spike fevers (104), do RUSH to an allergist, NOT TO THE ER UNLESS ABSOLUTELY NEEDED- MENTION STEVENS JOHNSONS. I am better, but it was scary......
take great care!!

Thanks Erica, that sound scary.
My rash is just a rash. But it feels like pins and needles.
The oral benadryl is not doing anything except making me loopy and nutty in the head.
The rash is over my entire body and my little bottle of hydrocortisone is just not cutting it.
I can't start my new IV antibiotic until this dang rash goes away.
