Hey, I just went to the doctor on Friday and he said that he thinks that I have leveled off on the orals that he has given me so far and wants me to go on iv medication again. Clindamycin to be exact. Does anyone know if this is for co-infections or what? I am a little down, because I will have to take it 4 times a day and I only had to take the rocephin once a day. It is definitely going to be hard. I feel like this is never going to end. I have been on treatment for a very short time compared to others, but sometimes it feels like a life time for me. 8 months so far.
If anyone has taken clindamycin iv before, please let know know your experiences. Thanks

Hi I did Clindamycin and I herxed to bad from it so we switched to Primaxin.
Everyone responds differently to meds. I have never tried the rochephin.
Try not to be discouraged. Its hard. I have been on IV's for 5 months now after being on orals for
a year. I still have a long way to go and I wonder if it will ever work. I have been very
down in the dumps as well. Just hang in there... and keep the faith.

JanJan Alot of abx 's other than rocephin work very well for lyme.
In 94 I had IV ABX & got 80% better and stayed that way on JUST oral doxy for 9 years. It can be done.
I did IV again 3-4 years ago because of bad relaspe. The IV clindamyicin worked really well for me. But I was also taking it in combination with Zith ? I think.
Anyway the clinda gave me strong herx's and they where really emotional for me. In that I went thru the up & down emotional roller coaster.
But I think it helped clear my speech and other symptoms.

I have been on IVs three times so far: in 2002 I was on IV Rocephin for 4 months followed by 2 months of IV Zithromax, in 2004 I was on IV Rocephin again for about 3 months, and from July 2005 until about a month ago I was on IV Clindamycin for 3 months followed by about 3 months of IV Primaxin.
I've had mixed responses to the various meds. I responded well to the first round of Rocephin in 2002, didn't respond well to the round in 2004, didn't respond well to the Clinda, responded well to the Primaxin but had to stop when I had a major overall crash including a drop in white blood cells and major GI issues (an as of yet undiagnosed motility disorder that makes it really difficult to eat).
When I was on the clinda, I only infused twice a day - 900mg each infusion. Do you know what dose you will be on for each infusion? Clinda can be used for co-infections when used in comob with other meds but by itself it can also be used for Lyme, that's what it was being used to treat for me.
There are a lot of IV meds and you can definitely respond to IVs more than once, especially if you're trying a different med than you've been on before. Different people respond differently to the different meds - that's just the nature of Lyme. Just give it time. Clinda may be a great med for you, or it may not and you may need to try something else. It really takes trial and error to find the right treatment and you have to keep searching.

Does IV dose have to increase with weight? We were told that an obese patient will need 4grams rocephin vs. 2. Does anyone have experience with this --or with a heavy patient doing well on 2 grams? Thanks.

My daughter did 11wks rocephin last yr. Then did 8wks Clyndimicin plus rocephin. Clindi 2x a day, 600mg each.
We have seen marked improvement this last round.
She has tummy troubles and can't get enough orals into her to be of use.
We are getting a new picc in next wk or 2 as we had some "technical difficulty" with line due to yeast trouble.
Dr. Jemsek's website has discussion about clindimicin you could look at...He believes that Clindi could replace Rocephin as IV abx of choice for lyme.
We have been upset and sad about our teen having to have picc line (she's facing at least a few more months).
But in our case, we have made friends with it as the results have outweighed the challenges. You do get desensitized along the way, I guess.
I think combining 2 abx at a time is helping.
Are you addressing possible co-infections?
We are learning to be assertive with dr. as in--I cannot infuse 4x a day during my work week. What alternatives do we have here?
