I was treated for neurological lyme disease 13 yrs. ago by IV therapy. I just recently came down with the same symptoms. The doctor just ran a new Lyme Titer test and is now sending me for an MRI and Lumbar Puncture. Is it possible for this to start all over again. I now live in California and they are not as knowledgable about Lyme Disease.

welcome to my world!

Diagnosed by Elisa/bullseye rashes--1991--treated 2 wks tetra, no symptoms almost 10 years.

Re-diagnosed 2001--WB and spinal tap--(not recommended unless ruling out other diseases)--Neuro involvement---treated 2 months IV and 6 months orals...no symptoms for almost 4 years.

Relapse (re-diagnosed) april 2005. Took a long time for me to admit it was back--it is very traumatic.

I am now in CA too---in the central valley--central CA--there ARE some LLMDs here and good ones. Post to the seeking a doc and get into one now--they have long waiting lists.

Did you treat for babesia or other coinfections? The current thinking is that recurrent Lyme is due to undertreated coinfections...specifically babesia. This was not the case when you were last treated.

I never treated for it before. It is kickin my BUTT!!

Sorry to hear about what you are going thru!
Welcome,
hope my info helps,
Trails

Hey devan! [Smile] It's VERY possible and VERY likely!! Please find an LLMD as soon as possible!!!!!! [that's a Lyme Literate MD]

By the way, a lumbar puncture is only 20% accurate in finding Lyme. So if the test doesn't show Lyme, don't rest in your search for answers! Also, the Lyme titers often miss Lyme, especially long term Lyme as you are dealing with.

You need to get a Western Blot test through Igenex labs in CA. Most regular drs will not use this lab and it is VERY important that you do!!

Be sure to read the Newbie Links by Treepatrol here in Medical Questions. It's near the top of the list of topics.

BTW, do you really want your full address in your profile?????

Spinal taps are notorious for not picking up Lyme when it is present. A false negative report could impede your access to treatment. Just so you know.

David,
Spinal taps are useful for excluding diseses other than LD.

If a person knows that he has LD doing spinal tap is traumatic and useless.
