I just got an rx for rocephin. After what I've read here about this abx, I'm so scared about my gall bladder.

Is it for sure that the gall bladder is going to need removal after rocephin??

Good evening SAK,

Congrats on the new Rx and I do hope that it helps you as it did me.

No, it is NOT a given that you will loose your GB. Some do, but many do not. Just be certain to have your doc add in an Rx for Actigall which is used to help protect the GB.

My best,
Melanie

My husband had no gall stones two months before starting IV Rocephin and Actigal.
An hour after finishing his 4th weekly pulse of Rocephin (4 days on and 3 days off), he experienced severe abdominal pain, enough that I had to call an ambulance to get to the hospital because he could not walk.
He had 3 small gall stones that had developed after just 4 weeks of the Rocephin.
Switched IV meds and the good news is that the stones dissolved once he was off the Rocephin and has had no further gall bladder issues.
Emergency docs didn't know that Rocepin could cause gall stones, so very glad we didn't go to surgery, like they suggested.
So, yes, it can Rarely cause gall stones, and no, it doesn't mean you will loose your gall bladder. It is a good antibiotic, and did seem to be helping......Just his experience....

Thanks Melanie. I'm hoping I won't lose my GB. I don't have an rx for actigall, but I will beg for it. How many mg and how many times per day??

I'm praying that since I'll be taking only 2grams of IV Roc M-F maybe that won't cause sludging.

I'll take milk thistle too . . .

Oh dear,

It has been so long since I did rocephin, that I can't remember what the dosage for Actigall was.

Perhaps someone will come along soon with that info.

I do think that pulsing 5 on and 2 off will help [Smile]

WOW! Thanks Docland for the warning and signs of problems. Thx again Melanie for your post. It's nice to know that the stones can go away after stopping tx.

I'm doing this IV for 6 weeks, says the rx. I will be soooo mindful though.

make sure you take Actigall while on Rocephin. Also, why only 6 weeks? Six weeks on IV is typically no where near enough! How long have you been sick? Do you have co-infections?
What else will you be taking along with the Rocephin? What is the plan after 6 weeks? you can't just treat for 6 weeks and expect a cure, you need a long term treatment plan. Stopping short, just means relapse.

make sure you ahve a Lyme Literate medical Doctor (LLMD) who knows what they are doing! If you are not treated correctly, your whole life can be ruined by this disease. [Roll Eyes]

I was on IV rocephin for 6 1/2 months. I was also taking Actigall 300 mg three times a day.

My LLMD also required a monthly gall bladder ultrasound.

My gall bladder was FINE during all of this.

Good luck.

I was on Rocephin for 10 1/2 weeks. It definitely helped, but I had no idea what it could do to the gall bladder and mine was removed a month after stopping the drug. It was very diseased.

I didn't get off the Rocephin because of the GB, by the way, and relapsed rather quickly after finishing my complementary oral abx.

Gullbladder issues are a Possible complication from Rocephin.

The first time I was on rocephin it was for 3 months.

I had no side effects.

The second time I was on rocephin (a couple years later)

I developed 6-8 gullstones..... very frequent gullbladder attacks...

and had to have my gullbladder removed.

Even though I do not have a gullbladder I can eat whatever I want. (fat, dairy doesnt bother me)

and my scars are really small.

they 2.5 years old . I think I would have to point them out to you....

and I am extremely light complected so they show more on me I think.

I hope the rocephin helps -

It helped me alot the first time I was on it....

BUT it took until the 7th week to start working.

Best wishes [Smile]

Thanks for all your input everyone. WildCondor, my llmd does electrodermal re-testing after 6 weeks to see if the medication needs changing. That doesn't mean I'm finished treatment.

He just wants to make sure the drug is still working for me, so we'll assess after 6w.

Azure Wish: What dose and how often did you take Rocephin? I'm going to take 2grams IV Mon-Fri.

Thanks again.
