I have always had stomach issues with antibiotics. Ceftin has always worked for me without problems.
At the beginning of Lyme treatment we tried : Doxy, Mino, Amoxycillin,and several others as well as Flagyl and Diflucan.
I couldnt tolerate any of these. After almost a year, Ceftin has pooped out on me. I also tried Omnicef (not strong enough).
I have been trying to do Zith, but last night my stomach hurt so bad I had nighmares of being shot in the stomach! I think all the years of untreated Celiac disease have left my tummy in bad shape.
Any ideas what else to try? Had 2 months of IV Rocephin with several near death complications. Dont want to do that again.Anyone else with really sensitive stomachs find an accepable antibiotic?
I am on tons of probiotics, have tried all types of stomach meds with antibiotics. Thanks for any suggestions. Cindy

All oral abx have trashed my gut. IM Bicillin has been the best for me so far.

From my own personal experience doxy although works well is very hard on my stomach.

If you are on zith, ask your doc for the kid's suspension rather than the tablets. World of difference for me.

i find liquid meds much gentler on the stomach.
for years i could not swallow pills and i was given the liquid.
beware though of zithromax it comes in a 2g liquid suspension...time release....so once it goes in you cant stop it.

I've had stomach probs even before the Lyme. Any antibiotic that bypasses the stomach would be much eaiser- ie. IM or IV

I found biaxin the easist, and IV Rocephin IV Clindymiacin I never even made it to the bathroom....
I think they all really take a toll on our stomachs....Im sorry I can really realate! good luck...Jill

How about Bicillin LA injections, they don't go into your stomach! You can do Rpcephin and Claforan by injection too, but I guess you already tried Rocephin.
Make sure you eat a full meal when taking oral antibiotics, then take the pills and dont lie down afterwards. Posted by clpgotlyme (Member # 7875) on :
Thanks everyone for your replies. I have been thinking about the Bicillin IM, might ask Dr. about that next.
Will see if I can find Zith in a gluten free liquid suspension!Also, not sure my insurance will pay for enough Zith.
I might see if the Ceftin will work if I raise the dose and add the Plaquinil my Dr. wants me to take.Hope thats not a stomach killer, too!
I guess I'm not alone in my stomach pain.Hope we all can feel better soon.
PS- Char, I have been gluten free for 5 years and it has helped a great deal.But trying to find out if meds are GF is very frustrating.

ED, Oatmeal is a no-no on a gluten free diet. But, I have tried most other foods I can think of to protect the stomach without results. I dont have trouble getting it down, so not sure honey would help. Thanks for the ideas. Cindy

Watch the liquid suspension of Zith if you have yeast issues. It is full of sugar so that it will taste good for kids. I did pretty well with it. Still think IM and IV are better.

Just wondering . . . do many experience tummy troubles even while taking good probiotics?
My son is taking three different kinds of probiotics . . . he takes them two hours after taking the antibiotics.
So far no stomach troubles . . . just wondering if many end up with ripped up stomachs even with the probiotics being a faithful part of the regimen.

i am sure i am not on target with this, but here goes, anyway...
i was extremely nauseous before taking prevacid for acid reflux. i didn't have pain, just nausea and burning in the upper esophagus, especially if i bent over.
i don't know if acid reflux can cause stomach pain, but the prevacid is a life saver for me.

Does the sugar free pudding have aspartame? Aspartame is VERY bad for you. It puts holes in the brains of rats pronto . . . it is very bad for your neurological system. Causes cancer too from what I've read.
This stuff is bad news and is in most sugar free products. Hell, it's even in gum that ISN"T sugar free (for some crazy reason).
This is also a political and scientific hot potato. Rumsfeld was instrumental in getting this stuff approved at the FDA even though the scientists studying it tried to block its approval for years.
Ap, Havent tried pudding as I get really congested with dairy. Guess I could try rice or soy pudding.Thanks for the tip. Cindy

Hi, I have sensitive tummy too. I found that the only abx that didn't give me chronic problems (rushing to the loo!) and actually helped my stomach was ceftin. I pulsed for two days with Flagyl, again no probs. Didn't really bother with anything like diets while I was on them but now I've stoppped I'm doing a clean up detox and taking probiotics.

I most certainly can relate to ALL of you with the tummy problems.
I had it BEFORE even ANY treatment. I think I had been on coated Aspirin for the heart and Vitamin C for TOO LONG.
So when I first started herbs, my stomach wasn't too good, plenty of pain and nausea, but didn't seem to get any worse either.
However, once I started Tetracycline, I couldn't stand the pain. I suffered through 28 days though. Then took 7 days off, with JUST the herbal protocol.
Then I went on Doxycycline, but could not get through the 28 day protocol, so HAD to stop after 24 days.
THAT was a month ago. I have NOT been on ANY abx since then. JUST the herbal protocol.
HOWEVER, WHEN I was on the abx and herbs in February, I started taking C-Salts from nutri.com and it helped a little bit.
BUT I couldn't realize the FULL benefits from the C-Salts UNTIL I stopped the abx.
I take the C-salts faithfully every day now, at about 3000mg to near 4000mg a day, and have not had ANY stomach pain or nausea in over a month.
Large doses of Vitamin C are indicated with Lyme treatment, but it is very hard on the stomach. The C-Salts just about eliminates the bad attributes of Ascorbic Acid. (about 94% eliminated).
PLUS I feel SO good, that it feels like I don't even have Lyme any more. I realize it is too soon to SAY that I do NOT have Lyme anymore, but I will keep you all posted as to how it all progresses.

Of all the orals I've taken, I've found Cedax to be effective and the easiest on my system. It's frequently prescribed for kids. A bit pricey though.

MMM, Yes, Ceftin has been the only one I could tolerate for the last year. It is losing its effectiveness. I fear its Biccilin or herbs for me!

Ceftin is the only antibiotic that didn't cause me any stomach problems too. It didn't really help me either though.
I take protonix and Carafate for my stomach. So far my stomach has been ok. I wouldn't be able to take any antibiotic without stomach meds.
