Hi- have been reading some of the picc line posts. I had mine put by the nursing service at my doctor's office, but never had the "x-ray" to make sure it was inserted correctly..now after reading some of the posts, I wonder if it's ok? Does it need to be x-rayed? No one ever mentioned it to me.. thanks Natalie

I would insist that a PICC only be put in with Fluoroscopy. Ask your LLMD for their opinion now that it's in.

I believe an x-ray or fluoroscopy is needed to insert a picc line. It has to be a certain spot not touching the heart.
I had mine put in and when they x-rayed it the nurse had accidentally threaded it into the jugular vein. Without the x-ray I would never have known.
X-ray is cheaper than fluoroscopy. Hiker

xRAY OR FLUROSCOPY SHOULD BE DONE. CORRECT PLACEMENT FOR A PICC LINE IS SVC.
WHEN I WAS WORKING AT A SUBACUTE CENTER, THE POLICY WAS NOT TO USE THE PICC LINE UNLESS RADIOLOGY REPORT WAS ON THE CHART AND INDICATED POSITIVE PLACEMENT: SVC- SUPERIOR VENA CAVA.THAT GUARENTEES CORRECT PLACEMENT.
CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT YOUR DR SHOULD BE DOING.I AM NOT A PHYSICIAN.
MERELY TELLING YOU WHAT MY INSTITUTIONAL POLICY WAS AND THAT I ABIDED BY IT.
SORRY, DIDN'T REALIZE MY CAPS ARE ON; EYES BAD TODAY AND DON'T WANT TO LOSE THE POST BY REDOING.

An X ray should always be done after PICC line insertion to make sure it is in the right place, and not irritating your heart.
