I just got a call from my GP saying that my liver function was high. She said it was 54 and 76 and it could be raised due to the abx.

Is there anything I can do to lower it? She said she did not know of anything.

I am not a doc, just another lyme patient. But I take Alpha Lipoic Acid 100mg a day and Milk Thistle twice a day. They protect the liver and help it more efficiently detox. Some take NAC, but I have yeast and it supposedly feeds the yeast so I don't take it.

You definitely have to have something helping to cleanse your liver. I also take the same supplements as Karen for liver support.

Did your doc suggest taking a break from the abx until your liver gets back into normal range?

I take milk thistle twice a day and 300mg of alpha lipoic acid twice day.

My liver enzymes were elevated last fall due to Ketek and I wasn't taking anything to protect my liver at the time. Then my LNP told me to start taking both of those supplements and stop the abx for a while.

After a month off abx, my enzymes came down, not all the way to normal, but low enough that I could start abx again. After I started abx again, I continued taking the supplements and my enzymes have continued to come down every month, so they really do work at protecting the liver.

This is pretty normal during antibiotic treatment. Most people's run higher than the top of the range. Usually LLMD's don't get concerned until they get REALLY outta range. I had to stop my PICC line because of really high numbers.

Surprised your doctor didn't advise you about these supplements. They're very protective. A short break is sometimes advised to get your liver back into shape. Mine had me off the PICC for a week and the numbers fell.

You don't say what ABX you are on.

Some GP's may pooh-pooh these remedies, but a surprising number of GP's do not any more.

Not to worry, but do load up on liver support, and good luck.

My son's were much higher than that. In a month they came down to normal. His llmd put him on milk thistle and Zhang's Hepa No. 2. He took these 3 times a day. He stayed on both for 2 months after levels were normal and now is just taking the milk thistle.

If taking the acids...Milk Thistle and ALA...consider adding the RDA of selenium to the mix. Protectant.

Bothrops,

What are you taking that made the liver enzymes go up? You may need a temporary break or lowered dose of antibiotics. You should be on Milk thistle etc, as the others have suggested. [Smile]

What kind of milk thistle do people recommend, how much, and how often?

Before taking milk thistle you might want to check with your doc to make sure you can take it with whatever meds you're on.

For some reason I have it in my head it isn't supposed to be taken with Mepron, but I may have dreamt that. [Roll Eyes]

Thanks everyone. I got the milk thistle today and will take two a day. Trueblue, I went to Maryland University web site and looked up milk thistle and it has very little side effect and interactions, looks safe and effective. I think the reason it was high is because it was day five on flagyl. I have been on a holiday since then , 2 weeks.

Again, thanks to everyone
