Am now 11 weeks pregnant and continue to be miserable. I have been on Amoxicillin since week 6. All docs (OB, maternal-fetal specialist, NP) involved agree on continued use of antibiotics during pregnancy.

I had done the whole gammut of orals before. Only herxed like crazy and could really make no progress. No real reaction to Amoxicillin but was alternating with Clindamycin after 10 days and the Clindy was a killer.

Was a time I went to IM bicillin because of horrible GI upset. Dr C beleived at one point my GI system was loaded with lyme and coinfections. As you can imagine, between the antibiotics and morning sickness from morning to morning, I am not tolerating food very well at all.

Will be seeing my nurse practitioner today to try to set up consult with Dr J in the next few weeks.

Any thoughts on switching to the bicillin in the mean time??? I did have some improvement with it at an earlier time.

So hard to know at this point if my physical decline is the pregnancy symptoms, the lyme worsening, or herxing from full dose of amoxicillin.

I did decide to take a couple of day break from it as of yesterday but am worried this may not be best for the babe.

Most of the research I have found does say that symptoms should improve with pregnancy and decline is more pronounced post partum.

My NP is very open minded and willing to treat. I have seen a holistic chiro in the recent past but have been so physically ill just cant make the trip right now.

Unsure about the naturopathic effects on the babe to or if there is anything that can even be used. I did read that ginger was good for nausea but then another few articles contraindicated this for the baby.

So in a catch 22 because everything seems to be contradictory when I research it.

Oh by the way, ultrasound showed healthy baby with all pieces and parts and at correct size [Big Grin] !!!!!

Any suggestions at all please......

Can't offer any advice, but do remember seeing some comments on pregnancy in the Hope to Heal Lyme Conference notes posted at http://www.betterhealthguy.com

Hi twobusymom,

I went to the conference and Dr. B talked quite a bit about pregnancy and Lyme.

On his slides:

*Goal of treatment is the protect the baby, even if the treatment is not optimal for mother (yuck)
*No evidence of increased maternal problems from the Lyme
*Serious post partum depression is very common and should be expected (double yuck...it happened to me)

Under procedure:
*Mother to be placed on antibiotics that are safe, and follow a rigid schedule! (his ! mark)
*Abx should begin before conception and be continued through to after delivery
* Abx can be oral (amoxicillin, cefuroxime) injection (Bicillin LA), or intravenous (ceftriaxone or cefotaxime)
*Must monitor antibiotic blood levels when oral meds are used

Let me know if you want to know what else he said...I'm kind of a slow typer, or I would put everything.

Susan [hi]

Oh, important: No breastfeeding
