Hello fellow Lymies. This is my first post. Even though I have been reading for months.. as much as my eyes will hold out for and feel like I know some of you....Anyway...I have been misdiagnosed for years. Like many of you my pain has been almost unbearable. My doctor put me on a new drug called Lyrica. It is used for neuropathy in diabetes. It has been a God sent... The first day after takeing it I got out of bed and walked into the middle of my living room...before realizing that I did it with no groaning, grunting or pulling myself up. It does make the head feel foggy....but thats a normal state for me....anyway...just wanted to share in the hopes it may help others.

Hi,

Thanks for sharing your good reaction to Lyrica.

I'm curious whether you had ever tried Neurontin? I couldn't tolerate even tiny doses, so I have been scared to try Lyrica.

But burning neuropathy, head to toe, is my most uncomfortable symptom. I also have muscle aches. It sounds like Lyrica is helping you with muscle pain, primarily - is that right?

My internist (not my LLMD) wants me to try Cymbalta, which is supposed to help neuropathy, too. But it is contraindicated when taking quinolone antibiotics.

I appreciate your feedback and the posts of others who have received help with neuropathy symptoms.

Jill

Hi Jill
The Lyrica helped with all the pain not just the nuropathy ( which feels like lava or hot lead being poured through my extremties). I have never tried the drug Neurontin you mentioned...I have however been on cymbalta...It was not good at all for me. It really increased my mood swings....boy did it [Eek!] Best Wishes

I think Neurontin is supposed to do the same thing as Lyrica - can't say for sure though. My insurance pays for Neurontin but not Lyrica and Ly is $121/month.

hey bubbear, im going to be fired soon too.

i was given this by my uro for my bladder pain. I could handle 25mg a bit...but i was very clumsy while on it. they tried to increase the dose to 75mg and i was drugged...it was really bad.

it didnt really do much for my symptoms....i did feel a bit more relaxed on it but that is it.

im glad that you are getting some relief

I take Lyrica at nite, 100mg. Helps with nerve pain and getting into the deep sleep for immune repair. I couldn't take Neurotin, have been told Lyrica has less additives, less fillers. Maybe that is why I can handle it better.

Don't be scared of it

My neuropathy felt as tho someone had peeled the skin off my legs, then salted the wounds. On my face it was buzzing, crawling and stinging. I think I would be dead if not for Neurontin. I take 2100mg day plus 25mg Elavil. It isn't completely under control but that little dash of Elavil (amitriptylline) was a major help. There are side effects to the N I don't like. Weight gain and sometimes tiredness and drunk feeling. I prefer these to the pain. I am on generic N now and doing okay but when they switched generics I couldn't tolerate it -- felt like someone steamrolled me -- so I can only take one manufacturer's brand. I am now on Medicare and Medicaid, so they cover it. When I could work I maxed out two credit cards just for symptomatic relief from pills!!

It is wonderful when you find something that helps.

I couldn't tolerate Neurontin either. For me Topomax helped without the side effects. I am hopeful that soon I won't need it but for now it does make things bearable most of the time.

I take my Topomax with a side of Elavil too.
