Hello,
My LLMD ordered a urine metal test with a DMSA challenge. I asked at the time that I was given the test and the DMSA if it would make me sick but was told that it was unlikely.

I took the 3,000 mg DMSA yesterday morning and by late afternoon was having some diarrhea. Not that unusual for me and I dismissed it. I ate fish (probably not a good idea)for dinner and shortly after dinner I had a terrible stomach ache and was awake off and on all night with a stomach ache. I'm not savvy with toxic metal issues like many on this board and just assumed that my doctor wouldn't give it to me if it might be dangerous.

After the test I looked it up (should have looked it up before hand) and found that some think that if you are heavily loaded with metals, a large does might cause some damage to kidneys or liver. Apparently, a stomach ache when taking the DMSA is a possible indication that one might have a large load of toxic metals.

I muscle tested that I needed vaccine detox (a homeopathic rememdy) and zinc in order to ameloriate the effects yesterday evening. I've needed a few things today along with the vaccination detox.

My concern is that the DMSA chelates metals out of the system and if one does not excrete them properly they may be recirculated and redeposited in areas that can cause more trouble than before they were released, like the brain. I do feel a bit foggy today but that is probably just from lack of sleep and the stomach pain being so intense.

Any thoughts or warnings? Anything I should look out for? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Terry

Are you certain your LLMD told you to take 3000 mg of DMSA? For a challenge test? What were the instructions?

If that is what you took in one dose or in one day, I am glad you are still upright.

Take care.

Sorry you are having such a reaction. Not fun. I have been reading on the Yahoo board CFSFMExperimental. This is discussed off and on. And I admit most of it is over my head. But one thing I have come away with from the reading is that if our glutathione level is not adequate, that we can indeed redistribute heavy metals. And they go from the gut to the brain. Many on there are working on increasing their glutathione levels before starting heavy metal work.

I don't know how correct this is. But it seems that the people who have low glutathione levels do have poor reactions to chelation. I know for me, when I get around to addressing heavy metals, it will be after I make sure my glutathione level is adequate.

Best,
Karen

Here is a place to read on how to increase your glutathione level:

Gigi - Yes, he gave me the pills in a little pouch, 6 of them to be taken all at once and in looking at a copy that I made of the lab order, he filled out that I would be taking 3,000 MG.

It was a timed test (6 hours) and I was to wait 2 hours before eating and drink 2-3 liters of water. I followed the instructions to the letter.

I still feel really terrible today. I lose track of a thought suddenly which is not a problem for me most of the time. I'm also having a LOT more palpitations and adjusting my minerals doesn't seem to be stopping them like it usually does. I'm having other symptoms too but I can live with them as long as I know that no real damage is being done.

I've been on Dr. K's site but I only saw a little about DMSA. I want to get something together to give to this doctor if this is not an acceptable dose because I fear that he will do damage if he is doing this wrong.

Hi Karen, yes, that is my understanding too. Glutathione is a blood cleanser and is needed to help carry the metals out of the body. I don't remember all of the details at the moment. I do know that I had my glutathione levels tested quite a few years ago and they were so low that the doctor was alarmed. I've worked on building them up over the years so hopefully they aren't as low and my body will recover quickly.

Thank you both for responding. If anyone has any specific info that I can send to this doctor, I'd really appreciate it.

Terry

I did the DMSA test and thought I was going to die for months. My MD no longer uses it. I am extremely sensitive to pretty much everything, though.

Every doctor has their own favorite challenge if they are expert in heavy metal problems. Some people use oral; the mildest oral challenge is with 500 mg DMSA and then collecting the urine for six hour.

Dr. K. as a rule does not use DMSA for a challenge. Whatever he uses is dependent on the condition of the patient and I don't want to get into details here. Any doctor can obtain his several page protocols that he teaches.

DMSA is a very toxic drug. 3000 mg seems to be way out in my opinion. Look for someone with experience and a proven record.

Re glutathione - if I had had to wait until my glutathione level had risen, I would probably be in the grave now. Glutathione is used all the time in the detoxing process. But it has to be given in combination with other substances.

Without other agents, it merely moves mercury out of the cell only to move it back into the cell a couple hours later. It keeps doing that. You have to have other agents waiting that can assist in the move. All too complicated for me the to detail here.

Any doctor attempting this should inform him/herswelf before doing harm.

I must admit I have heard horror stories on this subject and I know that it is not easy to find someone who knows to guide a patient through heavy metal detox. It can take several years, but it is an okay experience if done right, slowly and safely. It is a life saver and if done right, it will change your life in many ways to the positive -- a life that you did not know existed. Mercury toxicity is savage.

Take care.

Take care.

hi terry,

read about your experience. i have used the neurotoxin protocol by dr k in washington . he recommends a few things for ridding body of metals.
it makes sense to me to be gentle on the kidneys and really flush your system with water.

you can take supplements that will bind with the metals so that they'll be excreted.

hope this helps
