My skin is really burning up today. The top of my scalp feels like its definately on fire. I know a lot of us have/had this symptom, so what helps it? I have yet to find something that will work. Thanks!

Nancy,
I'm sorry to say that in my three years of constant burning pain, I have not found anything to help.
I've tried numerous topical ointments/creams for everything from arthritis to carpal tunnel with no luck. I even put ice packs on me but it hasn't helped.
I couldn't tolerate even a tiny dose of Neurontin. But one Lyme pal of mine does get a reduction of burning from Neurontin and Elavil. But I can't handle that many meds.
My internist suggested Cymbalta (the new anti-depressant, anti-neuropathy combo) but I've read some bad things on this forum about getting off the stuff. Plus you can't take it with quinolone antibiotics.
I even tried some new liquid topical drops that are specifically for neuropathy from the chronic fatigue syndrome catalog and it did nothing.
I would be forever grateful to anyone who could suggestion something.
Take care, Jill

Some doctors recommend Xanax and I have been on a low dose of Celexa, which seems to help somewhat.

There's a new drug out called Lyrica which is supposed to help and is also used as an add on for seizures. Didn't help my seizures and I don't have burning pain, so I don't know if it works or not. Hiker

Unfortunately I have tried the Lyrica. It didn't help and I couldn't tolerate the side effects .
I called my LLMD's office today. He told me to quit the antibiotics (i am only on amoxycillin), to take 50mg benadryl every 4 hours and to see him in his office in two weeks. Oh brother, please, please, please take this burning pain away!!! Geesh!

Nancy,
Im not saying that you have this, at all, but one thing that caused burning pain from me ( especially in my scalps and bottom of my feet) ..
and basically, left me in so much pain you couldn't touch me
was bartonella. I did three months rifmapin 600 mg and it went away. I tested negative for bartonella at the time.
NOW im positive for it. Go figure.

I tested positive for it. Unfortunately the antibiotics for it made me very sick--including Rifampin. Is there anything else I could look into to fight Bart??

At one point I had very bad burning in my legs. I was told about the Lemon oil olive drink so I drank that for a couple of weeks and the burning was gone. Don't know if it will help you but it can't hurt. I'll try and find a link
I use stevia or xylitol to sweeten it cause it's a bit tart
Thank you, Ill definately look into it!

I cant help much in the area of offering suggestions for medications for relief because I have been "benched" due to high liver enzymes.
But something I tried just this evening for relief of the burning sensations and mucle aches was a super hot bath with 2 cups of epsom salt and about 15 drops of PEPPERMINT OIL (I got it at whole food market).
Even thought the bath was HOT the peppermint oil had a cooling effect. I sat in the tub for about 30 minutes completey submersed except my head...It has worked a lot for the burning sensation!
I have been out of the tub for over an hour and I still have a cool tingly feeling where the muscles once ached and the skin felt like it was burning...I dont know how long this will last--but I am pleased with the results as of this moment!

Hi Nancy,
I used essential oils externally in 15%-20% dilution and that killed the itching burning sensations in the skin. It initially makes it slightly worse, but it dies down tremendously if you continue to apply the oils. Also, hot baths with essential oils in them helped. Also, I found that pinching the skin instead of scratching it gives better relief, especially in combination with the essential oil application.

Ive actually forgotten what is used for bartonella except rifampin.
I know zithromax and biaxin are, but combined with something else. Either that, or Im thinking babesia.

WOW It is so nice to finally no that I am not alone! I have the burning pain it gets so bad sometimes that it then goes numb. My bodies way of fighting the pain, I would guess. The only thing that has helped me is gabapintin although it makes me a zombe no matter how little I take. Hot baths for me make the muscle pain better but the burning worse. I will try the Lemon & Olive oil drink. Thanks for the ideas!

Dr B's guidelines state that the "treatment" of choice for bart is levaquin (perhaps with a proton pump inhibitor). There are other abx used but this was his first recommendation from what I can recall.
