Consulted with LLMD pediatrician on Wednesday regarding my pregnancy and the baby's care. Much Relief!!!
From everything I heard it seems treating in pregnancy is not alot different than non-pregnant other than choice of antibiotics and safety for the babe.
Meeting with NP this afternoon to begin IM Bicillin injections. I was on Amoxicillin with MUCH GI upset (always a biggie in herxes for me) and herxing of other symptoms.
Suggested I pursue the IM injections to give my gut a rest.
The dose of antibiotics is adjusted according to patient response and tolerance. He listed three other antibiotics besides amoxi that are safe for pregnancy.
Probiotics are to be taken.
He also stated blood levels are not really necessary as progress is monitored in moms response to the meds. Basically, as long as the mom is feeling better.
I dont think herxing is recommended either as he spoke several times of mothers response to antibiotics and dosage adjustments of various antibiotics according to that.
Will be more specific with next consult as far as his opinion on herxing effects to baby.
I would think as in my case of severe GI intolerance, loss of weight, food intolerance it would be a very bad thing in growth and development and the babes immune fighting ability.
He didnt have an objection with ginger tea for nausea as far as the babe, but was concerned about the possible effect on my SVT and heart symptoms.
Wont touch it since I am trying to control the SVT with lowering my meds. Cardiology thinks higher dose may be contributing to the fatigue by lowering my BP too much. I have seen some improvement in that.
At this point he has approximately 128 babies born to TBD moms that were on antibiotics prior to or during their pregnancy. Of those, 8 infants tested positive to TBD at birth either in cord tissue or blood, placenta or foreskin tissue.
Those babies were/are on antibiotics for the first six months of life and thus far are doing well.
Breastfeeding is also an option. He recommended continued antibiotics while doing so.
No colostrum can be given to the baby as this form of breastmilk has been stored over the course of the pregnancy and may be a reservoir for the bacteria.
His office is sending a kit from his suggested lab for all testing necessary for the babe post-partum including breastmilk.
Please no responses with personal opinions of pregnancy while having lyme. I would prefer to remain educational regarding both negative and positive challenges of pregnancy and TBDs.
I am ONLY posting because I know there are many on this forum, or may have family members, that are interested at some point in conceiving or like me have been faced with a very unexpected pregnancy.
Education, prevention, sharing of experience and support is the key.

Cheryl, What abx did your doc say were safe to use? Mine said I could continue Omnicef but I am hesitant. I will try to conceive in about two months and want to know what might be safe to take. thanks.

I would love to know more about how you are able to breastfeed on antibiotics while having lyme disease and not tranfer the lyme to the child through the milk.I would love to be able to breastfeed my next child.

Truly, congratulations.
I know that when I got a breast infection while breast feeding my babies I was given antibiotics. So, it must be okay.

I would like to offer the suggestion that the American Academy of Pediatrics on their website, aap.org, has good info on which drugs seem to be okay for the mother to take during breastfeding.
I learned about this several years ago from my lactation consultant when my LLMD mistakenly thought that he could not prescribe tetracycline to me.
Anyway, it's hard to find the chart, but here is how I did it:
and click on "Transfer of Drugs and Other Chemicals into Human Milk",
then go to Table 6, "Maternal Medication Usually Compatible in Breastfeeding"
This info has been researched for many drugs.

Would it be possible for the original poster to contact me offline? I'm 15 weeks pregnant and found out that I had Lyme two weeks before I got pregnant (completely unplanned after 17 years of infertility). My OB is in disagreement with both the diagnosing doctor and an infectious disease specialist who both feel that I should be treated at this time since I have already given birth to one son after contracting Lyme and before being diagnosed and all indications are that he contracted a mild case of Lyme from that pregnancy. I do not want that to happen again with the pregnancy, but I need so good documentation to take back to this doctor and I can't seem to find what I need.
