Hi, I'm Erin, 29 yrs old, mama to 3 children. I had a blood draw last week for a western blot (through Quest - I know, not the best lab .) I have at least 3 questions, all with different subjects, so I'll post them separately.
My youngest is 11 weeks old & exclusively breastfed. *If* I have LD, I don't know when I contracted it. I had a fever on May 2nd & now have constant dizziness/lightheadedness & very achey knees that sound like rice krispies with every bending movement. I had an injury to my left knee as a child which resulted in occasional arthritis & swelling, but now it's both knees & I have to brace to sit/squat or stand. I also have pain in my heels, on the bottom of my feet.
SO...I am nursing, I have read conflicting evidence about whether or not LD is transmittable via breastmilk. I don't want to sto nursing my baby, I think the benefits outweigh the risks, it might not transfer, I migh not have it, etc..& breastmilk has so many lifelong protective benefits.
My toddler is also still nursing, along with my newborn. What can I take to treat LD that is safe while nursing? I know doxycycline is not safe.

I think you can take Amoxicillin. But, if you do have LD, then I do not think the benefits outweigh the risks.

Dear Erin,
My thought is that you need to get yourself to a top lyme specialist as quickly as humanly possible. Most dr. are not aware of the latest findings and treatments for lyme and co-infections.
If you do have lyme, and your symptoms sounds like it is a distinct possibility, the sooner you treat the better. Some of these strains can cause a very fast serious decline in health and functioning.
With these little ones depending on you, you don't want to go down, so to say.
Study up on transmisssion via breastmilk. You can search here or newbie links. I have seen drs that say yes, it is.
Your baby may suffer horribly if he or she contracts lyme. (known to cause autism, other cognitive problems, digestive trouble...basically the lyme spirochetes attack every body system.
In my opinion, it is not worth the risk.
I feel like I am coming across like the voice of doom here. My kiddos have been through *&!! and I think of any child, especially a tiny one suffering, especially if it can be prevented.
I did not take our initial exposure seriously.

Lyme disease can be transmitted via breastmilk. I would get checked out and a full workup done by a LLMD. Amoxicillin and Bicillin are used during pregnancy, I would call Dr. J the guru.

Oh and how do I get in touch with Dr. J? He will talk to my doc? My doc is a believer in LD & is very holistic, but she has admitted that she doesn't know enough abou it.
