My whole family has had or still does suffer from lyme, so we know it well. We also have a great LLMD. However, my 19 mo old son was bitten tonight, and we're not sure what to do. Can anyone tell me what the length and dosage of medicine one would follow? I want to see if our GP will treat him. We cant afford another family member with our LLMD! If it comes down to it, we will bite the bullet and take our son to this doc. We'd like to try the GP first.
Any suggestions?

If it where me I would call your LLMD first.
GP's tend to under treat. Or not belive in abx for a tick bite. They are usually un-educated in the compexity's of Lyme Disease.
It really important to get in abx with the first 24-48 hours after a tick bite.
Did you wipe the area really well with alcohol?

Did you save the tick? Could have it tested.
Sorry to hear about your son.
Check the Newbie links -- I think Dr B's 2005 guidelines give meds and doses for kids.
Someone else with kids should be along soon to help.
If you have tea tree oil, that would be a good disinfectant.
These things always happen on the weekends -- hope you can get ahold of your LLMD.

As bea said---Dr B's guidelines are the most up to date and one of the best resources we have.
My nephew was just bitten. Dr B's guidelines say 28 days of doxy or similar. Most people here thought 2 months.

What do you have in the cupboard??? If you all have lyme, you have to have some partial bottles or share your current good stuff, YOU are taking.
I didnt say this but will get you to Monday morning and a whole lot easier to get LLMD's attention.
Is he allergic to any thing?? DO you know for sure??
GP, unless you know one differently, he will say "We dont have lyme here!" OR "take these little pills for 7 to 14 days,,, all better now!!!"(too little, too short of time)
GP would probably say go to ER, and we all know how we are treated THERE!! Or chances are slim there is lyme in THAT tick,,, so wait and see!

Most docs use amoxicillin, but I would have no clue as to dosage. If you have some, you might try that and then call the LLMD for dosing.
If if were MY child, I would treat for at least 4-6 wks just to be sure. Remember that the keets replicate every 3-5 wks and therefore you need to be on the abx during that time.

PS...Don't bank on tick testing. I wasted $110 having a tick tested thru Igenex for Lyme and babs.
Nine days after the bite, I came down with a "flu-like illness"....three weeks after the bite, the test came back NEGATIVE!
I KNOW it wasn't the flu. Thankfully, I had started on abx the day I was bitten.

I was Nan B and then I also think I went by heis1am (not sure). Yes, I was just saying to my husband that I was happy to be "back on the Lymenet board" Wish we didnt have to be here, either, but you know how that goes!
Thanks to everyone who is taking time to respond to my post about our littlest guy. I couldnt get a hold of our LLMD, but the on call GP gave us a month of amoxy. Not sure of the dosage. Will check that out. The GP asked if there was "clearing" in the middle of the red around the bite. Thought that was funny. Why, would you NOT have thought it lyme if there was no center circle? Sheeesh!

It's great to see your post on the board; you were around when I first started hanging out here, and I have always loved your posts.
I hope your absence means you've felt well enough recently to be paying attention to your life. That's great, if it's the case.
Sorry about your son's tick bite. You've alreayd gotten some good advice. I just wanted to add that I had a bite and rash in 1996 and was given 15 to 20 days of antibiotic then. No symptoms, so I figured I was fine.
No symptoms THEN...but the bacteria was still there, doing all its awful damage.
So the symptoms (or lack of them) can't be trusted any more than the tests.
Good to see you back; if this had to happen to your son, I'm glad you caught it ...and quickly.

I would give him 6 weeks of amoxy, by Dr. B's guideline, if he can tolerate it. Plus some supplements (probiotics, if possible).
I would also try to give him astragalus, very tolerable to small kids. Mix in something sweet or in milk. Suggestion of Buhner himself.
I would also add lyme nosodes (homeopathic).
I have a small child, 2 years old, and I keep a 6 week reserve of amoxy in my closet plus the astragalus and the nosodes. Just in case she gets a bite.
