Here's a question that I am hoping some people can help with.

When we are dealing with pain that we cannot ignore and medications don't seem to get rid of the pain, how do people deal with this every day?

I think that if pain is below a certain thresh-hold then you can put it in the back of your mind but if it's above a certain point then it becomes impossible to ignore. At this point it really seems to take away from the quality of life that we want.

So if there doesn't seem to be a way to get this pain below that thresh-hold, what do people do to cope?

Hi, David,

I've had absolutely burning, searing pain in both my hip and my knee. I have taken a pain med, but I have never taken it steadily, so it doesn't hold the pain at-bay, really.

I've found acupuncture extremely helpful, as well as massaging the affected areas.

I've also tried a variety of topical creams, some with more success than others. Right now, I'm using something called Real Relief Plus (got it from my LLMD).

Sometimes, I hold my knee and just cry, the pain is so intense. When it hits my hip, my massage practitioner gave me some exercises I can do standing that can take the edge off the most extreme pain.

Before I learned those exercises, I once had to call my SO to pick me up from the store. I was in too much pain to drive.

My pain has gone in cycles, getting markedly better at one point then returning to a lesser degree several months ago.

My first advice is not to give up on getting it below that level. I don't know how long you've had pain, what type of pain and what you've tried. But if you haven't worked with a pain specialist then I would recommend working with one and being patient.

I worked with a pain specialist for many months before I found what worked for my pain. I tried many, many pain meds until I discovered the magic answer, which for me was Flexeril, a muscle relaxer.

As far as coping when the pain is there, yeah it's really hard. When my pain is the worst I can't concentrate or think about anything else.

Yoga helps me a lot. It just relaxes me body and mind and helps to keep my body loose. I often take a pain killer before the class to help me through.

Keeping my mind busy also helps a lot. I find the pain is worst when I'm home alone in front of the tv.

Using an enzyme that attacks fibrin helps me with pain.
