I have cats claw, but apparantly samento is better to take for Lyme. I'm having trouble finding it though...any recommendations on where to get it?
Is it really that much more effective than Cats claw?

"Better" is debated. Some say TOA-free is better, others say it is needed to be effective. I would look at www.biopureus.com or www.nutramedix.com for Samento. www.allergyresearchgroup.com also carries it under the label Prima Una De Gato.

thanks!
I hardly ever buy supplements now without a recommendation first, but I'm starting on regular cats claw until samento comes in.

Two sides to this:
Both sides sell what they say is better so it is hard to really know.
The research done on the TOA free (expensive) Cat's Claw was done by the guy who holds the patent on the process to remove the TOA's. Conflict of interest?
The owner of Rain-Tree who believes the whole herb is better also has financial interest in her opinion.
I know of two very well respected LLMD's (one is my doc) that use Cat's Claw. One says use TOA free, the other says the whole herb is what's needed. So who knows ....
I have tried both ........ very minor reaction to TOA Free. ..... Big herx from Rain-Tree caps. I did these treatments about 6 months apart so there is no telling if it was the substance used or the point in my treatment.
Stephen Buhner the Author of Healing Lyme, recommends the whole herb.
Hard to decide.

Good summary by robi.
I didn't know the second link before. And I agree when they write:
quote: Surely, if the doctors were so confident that TOA-free Cat's Claw is superior, wouldn't it have made sense to have a three-way trial - one that tested standard Cat's Claw vs. the TOA-free variety vs. a placebo?
That would have allowed them to measure any true impact the TOA was having - negative or positive.
Why the Samento TM people perform this and that and another study without proving the decisive point making strong statements though?
So Buhner's saying seems to remain valid: (Buhner, "Healing Lyme", p.102)
quote: Without extensive in vivo studies and other laboratory replication of this original study, it is improper to determine that TOAs inactivate POAs in cat's claw.
The evidence from other studies and millenia of use indicates that the assertion is incorrect.
See "The TOA/POA controversy", Buhner, p.99-102.
Also the real life experience from people @ this forum doesn't seem to show any decisive advantage of the Samento TM stuff against the whole herb, exept for money making. Those guys are great in marketing.
And I have a bias against people who make the name of a healing plant their possession & trade mark, though putting down the real plant. Posted by JimBoB (Member # 8454) on :
I agree with you wholeheartedly 777.
I will stick with BUhner's recommendation of using the proven by centuries of use, whole herb Cat's Claw.
HE is the Master Herbalist, and does NOT own any of those companies to the best of my knowledge.
You also save a ton of money on the whole herb, expecially if you buy it in bulk and encapsulate it yourself.
