Long time not checking in, but after years of almost complete recovery its back. Has anyone experienced severe upper back pain from their lyme? (shoulder areas in the middle of the back). Also a question I have never asked over the years is what is the exact cause of the burning in different areas? thanks old friends

I too have pain between my shoulder blade and my spine, but only on one side. This seems to be a common symptom. My Dr. told me that the buggies like to hide in your meninges and that's why your back hurts. When my Lyme gets bad, I get burning sensations also. I think this is because your nerves are getting messed up by the bugs.

Make sure to rule out other possibilities for pain between the shoulder blades -- includes heart attack, gallbladder or liver problems. A chiropractic adjustment could also be needed.
Hubby has these type of pains which come and go for no apparent reason. His pains seem to be inflammatory in nature -- sometimes advil helps or herbal anti inflammatories.
Yes, yes, yes! So severe that it felt like my muscle was being ripped from the bone. Literally. It also referred into my hands and wrists.
I found relief through a pain specialist. After trying many, many different meds and physical therapy, what worked was Flexeril. Flexeril is a muscle relaxer. I actually take it every night.
It didn't help until I got to a large dose, 20mg a night. For over a year I was at the max dose of 30 mg. After a few weeks, you get used to it and aren't so exhausted from it.
The problem is, without the Flexeril, my muscles tighten. Between the shoulder blades is the worst. Once the Flexeril started working, physical therapy had a beneficial impact. I had myofascial trigger point release and did strengthening exercises.
I eventually started yoga, which helps keep things relaxed and also helped build muscle. One of the best aspects of it is I learned how to use all my muscles so I didn't strain the shoulder area.
I'm now down to 10mg of Flexeril. I went off it and was fine for alomst a month. Then my back started to tighten again.
