I have been on IV doxy and rocephin for about 18 months. I have a constant dry mouth and white tongue. I also have frequent gastrointestinal problems. I just read a little about candida and wanted to know how you can tell if you have it and what to do about it if you do have. I do take probiotics 2 times a day. Is this enough to prevent it. My doctor never even mentioned it before.

Hi ek,
If you have been on abx that long then you do have candida. The question is how bad is it making you feel, are you keeping it in check?

White tongue sounds yeasty. I am currently off abx after 8 months to take a week of diflucan due to awful new symptoms and vag yeast infection.

I read that some llmd's will have you do a month on diflucan and get awsome results with pain relief...

Not sure about candida tests but I will ask my doc this week, I think there is a stool test for it.

Probiotics? Good question about how much...everyone says take two to three caps three times a day with meals but I don't know if that means each cap has 1 billion organisms or 50 bill organisms...!

I take lots of fat/sugar free yogurt, and two to three 10 billion org caps a day. (30 billion total).

Can anyone else help with the number of billion/caps question....

Good luck to you

Not that you need another message board to search but I have found this one helpful: I also cut/pasted the home yeast test you can do.

Hey ekvb

I wouldn't take any caps that are under 1 billion. The multi strains are also good.

Now, this is just my personal opinion but when taking abx I don't think you can take too much.
Again just my personal experience.

Along with pro-biotics/yogurt/kefir- Diet helps the most in keeping yeast at bay.
And also nystatin or diflucan when needed.

For me I know there's a yeast problem when I get :

a coating on my tongue

vag yeast infection

really bad foul gas

pain when I swallow in m esopogus along with extreme fatigue and nausea and an all over sick feeling. This has often been a sign of upper GI yeast infection.

make sure to talk over everything first with your LLMD

I must say, I'm a little wary of any site that espouces such a simple test for candida and then has something to sell you to make it go away. Remember that even the "trademark" yeast symptoms are almost exactly like lyme symptoms.

Not that there may not be some truth but keep your eyes open...

Is there any particular reason why you couldn't just take the relatively simple, cheap, often insurance covered Diflucan (flucanazole) or similar? Do you really need a 1 month supply that's over $200?

Great Smokies Labs does a test called a Comprehensive Digestive Stool Analysis. It tests for Candida along with a bunch of other things. Your dr has to order the test though.

"Successful control and elminiation of a Candida Albicans overgrowth requires a multifaceted program as described below. Failure to follow ALL the steps simultaneously will result in slow progress and will lengthen healing time significantly. The program should be tailored to the individual and must balance the need to eliminate the Candida and deprive it of its food source while insuring proper nutrition for the individual."

Five Steps to Candida Elimination:

1. You must starve it into submission by eliminating its food source.

2. You must kill it with anti-fungal herbs and supplements. [e.g....garlic, onion, caprylic acid, Pau D'Arco capsules or tea, clove, grapefruit seed extract, olive leaf extract, oil of oregano, tea tree oil, Echinacea, Goldenseal, black walnut, MSM, barberry root, uva ursi, neem leaf, biotin]

3. You must reestablish the proper balance and quantity of probiotic bacteria in the digestive tract. [...multi-strain lactobacillus acidophilus and bifidus capsules with FOS should be taken between meals to maximize repopulation of the digestive tract by beneficial bacteria.]

4. You must reestablish proper levels of all B vitamins (yeast free) and utilize other immune enhancing supplements to boost immune system function. [e.g ... B complex vitamins (yeast free), biotin, beta 1-3 glucan, colostrum, maitake mushroom, vitamins A, C, E, zinc and selenium]

5. You must cleanse and heal the digestive tract to promote proper elimination of toxins and Candida and assimilation of nutrients. [e.g...chlorophyll, MSM, omega 3 fatty acids found in flax seed and salmon oils, GLA found in borage, evening primrose and black currant oils. Pantothenic acid, digestive enzymes between meals]
