I take my armour as soon is i get up in the AM. How long should I wait before taking any other pills or food?

Thanks,
robi

Sammi said recently that you have to wait 4 hrs!! Well, that throws my schedule!!!

So I'm doing what she suggested. I take them sublingually. Then I take my other pills.

The pills SMELL terrible, but they taste just fine!

You need to be sure you are not taking any magnesium within four hours or that will prevent absorption of your med.
I take my Armour at 2 am for this reason....I always have to wake up to pee then anyway.

I thought my endocrinologist told me to wait at least 30 minutes, but that doesn't sound right compared to what others are saying here ???

My memory isn't the greatest lately.

Maybe 'cuz I'm not waiting long enough for my thyroid meds to get absorbed [Roll Eyes]

I have been taking it for over a year and wait 30 minutes to one hour before eating. What is important is to wait the same amount of time each day - but do not eat for at least half and hour. I do not know about the magnesium.

I take my armour upon rising, and when shower and stuff. My dr says 20-30 minutes is enough... Sometimes I will for get to take it before breakfast, and that's no big deal, I will take it after , mid morning and not worry.

Mg+ will block it's absorption, so you don't want to take it within 2 hours of having Mg+ suppliments, cuz ya just waste it.

The thing that helps me is having it right on my bedside table with a glass of water, and not worrying.

Wish you well!

My prescription info on Armour says to this medication 4 hours before or after taking any products containing aluminum or iron, such as antacids, sucralfate, and vitamins and minerals. Also take it away from soy products.

My LLMD wants me to split the dose between morning and evening, but I just take it all in the morning or I would never get my supplements in.

Am I just being stupid?? Doesn't taking it sublingually solve the 30 min to 4 hr problem??

Posted by tabbytamer (Member # 3159) on :

I guess that would depend on whether disolving sublingually has the med still going through the digestive system?

hiker, the reason for splitting the dose is because T3 has a short half life, and you get more benefit by spreading it out. I totally understand the problem of fitting everything in, though.

http://www.healthrecipes.com/armour_thyroid.htm

Armour Thyroid Dosing-- TWICE a day.

The most common starting dose for patients with hypothyroidism is Armour thyroid, 90 mg which is cut in half with a razor blade and half is taken after breakfast and the other half after dinner. Taking it after meals also helps to reduce volatility of the blood-level of T3. If the patient has any problem breaking or cutting the pill, they should purchase a pill-cutter at the pharmacy. The TSH, Free T3 and Free T4 are then repeated in one month and the dose is adjusted.

Taking the Armour thyroid twice a day overcomes traditional medicine's major objection and resistance to using natural thyroid preparations - its variability in its blood-levels. Most doctors using Armour thyroid are not aware that Armour thyroid should be used twice daily and NOT once a day. The major reason is that the T3 component has such a short half life and needs to be taken twice daily to achieve consistent blood levels.

Ever since lyme I can't get my throid regulated!
Do you guys have that problem too?

If you are taking the armour subling. then you are bypassing the gut and it goes into the bloodstream. Although I still wait 2 hrs.

There are vitamins that block absorption of your thyroid - mag./ iron/ vitC/ calcium/ no antacids.

Be careful of like big glasses of OJ/ Milk in the am due to the calcium.

Soy is death for the thyroid so I avoid the stuff!

Goitrogenic foods like brussels sprouts, rutabaga, turnips, cauliflower, African cassava, millet, babassu (a palm-tree coconut fruit popular in Brazil and Africa) cabbage, and kale can act like the antithyroid drugs propylthiouracil and methimazole in disabling the thyroid function, so they should not be eaten in large amounts by someone on thyroid hormone replacement who still has a thyroid. It's thought that the enzymes involved in the formation of goitrogenic materials in plants can be destroyed by cooking, so thorough cooking may minimize goitrogenic potential.

I take 1 grain in the am, and 1/2 grain in the afternoon due what minocat was saying about a half life.
I think that is why we crash at 3 everyday. So hope this helps

blessings

So if I'm taking all my supps with my meals, is it OK to take the Armour one hour after the meals? I'm going to continue the sublingual method.

I had been taking it on an empty stomach.

Hi Lymetoo. I am glad you are able to take the Armour sublingually. It makes it much easier! By doing so it bypasses the digestive system therefore there is no interaction.

For the others who asked, you cannot have any iron, calcium, or magnesium products within four hours of taking it. This should all be listed on the pharmacy sheet you get with the pills.

I have to take iron and magensium because I am deficient, and I don't want to have to juggle what I can eat when so taking it sublingually solves the problem.

oh, my gosh!

I've been taking my thyroid without any concern about food or supplements. It was not on the bottle so if I read it, it went out with all the other things I've forgotten. (=

I've got one in my mouth, sublingual, as I write this.

Thanks everybody for the wake-up call!!!

Thanks, Sammi! I'm so glad you posted about this last week!!

I saw NOTHING about the 4 hr thing on my handout from the pharmacy. Sheesh!

Your welcome Lymetoo. Taking it this way helps me a lot because I have to take so many other things that could interfere.

I think we learn more from each other than we do from the doctors!

I used to wait 30 minutes before I drank my coffe with cream and now I wonder if that's right.

Oh man, I am so confused.

My last LLMD told me to split my Armour Thyroid dose between AM and PM because of the half life thinggie.

But my most current LLMD told me to absolutely NOT split the dose between AM and PM because when taken at night it can hinder sleep. Since sleep is such a big issue for most Lymies, she says to always take in in the morning.

Also, no one has ever mentioned the food limitations. Right now I take my dose just after breakfast with the rest of my meds. I have to look into this...

Oy vey.

I take mine at dinner time and don't feel it interrupts my sleep at all.

If I take my thyroid too late in the day, I can notice a bit of heart racing feeling when lying down trying to sleep.

I guess, since everyone is different, we won't know until we each try it for ourselves.
