hi everyone,
going on day 5 of doxy and was curious about herxing. when i first "thought" i had lyme it was after a course of zpac where my body underwent almost a poltergiest experience, it was awful. since then my symtpoms, come and go and change, etc.

now that i'm on doxy, my old symptoms of eye twitching, facial numbness, vertigo and vision problems are coming back and leaving of course. now i'm having rib pain, back pain, headache, various things, i feel like i really "herxed" the first time. but now i don't feel like the doxy is working because i'm not "herxing" the way i did with my first antiobiotic and my symptoms come and go. i now also have "breast" pain, stabbing, no lumps there but it's more somatic, you touch it it hurts.

just curious to know how this "herx" thing goes and if it's obvious and how long would the doxy take for it to start, if it does.

thanks
karen

Karen,

My herxes are different with different antibiotics. It can be because some antibiotics get coinfections and because some cause neurological herxes.

I just started zith recently and have old symptoms returning I haven't had in 2 years.

My herx is very predictable time wise...it happens day 10, 11 or 12 after starting an antibiotic and lasts anywhere from 1-5 days.

What happens to me is not consistent at all. The first time I was given IV vanco during knee surgery I ended up with full body nerve pain. It was awful. The orthopedic doc had no idea what was happening to me.

When I was given a bunch of IM shots for a urine challenge test for lyme, I couldn't stand up during that herx.

When I started IV rocephin, I felt very sick...just for one day.

When I started doxy, I was very sick central nervous system wise for 3 days...couldn't type, felt like I was stumbling over words while trying to talk, felt like I was going to drop things, and felt quite dizzy.

When I was started on IM bicillin, I ended up with tachycardia and was in the ER for 5 hours.

I've just doubled my dose of bicillin. I imagine in 10-12 days I will have a significant issue of some kind. But, I don't know how it will hit me. I'm wondering if it won't be more tachycardia, since that is what happened with my first bicillin. I intend to call my cardiologist on Monday and see if he wants to get a reading on my heart if it races again.

Aniek's response is very common in Lyme herxheimers.

Go here and read about herxing:

Different antibiotics work different ways, and since lyme happens to be one of those lovely bacterias that is made up of different parts to it ( couldnt think of a better word ).. like the L form, cyst form, etc, it takes different abx to kill each form of it.

My herxes were all different. Some of them about killed me and some of them hardly left a dent. Sometimes they came in a schedule, and sometimes, ( like for a year), I just herxed constantly.

It all depends.
