I have a white tongue which I think is yeast. I am taking both liquid nystatin and diflucan, but after a week it hasn't helped at all. I have tried swishing diluted oil of oregano, mouthwash, and hydrogen of peroxide. I open up capsules of probiotics and swish them around, too.
I am on the low carb anit-yeast diet and am not on antibiotics, so this is throwing me for a loop.
Only the back 3/4th of the tongue is affected, not the front, sides, or other parts of the mouth. I do have an unusually dry mouth (Sjogrens), so I am beginning to wonder if it is even yeast.
Any ideas. Hiker

Maybe if you dump the liquid nystatin, things will get better. I understand the liquid contains sugar....go figure!!!!
I've never had it in my mouth, so I can't help you there. I hope someone comes along soon with the answer.
I've heard of using diluted bleach, but it has to be VERY diluted.
I'm so sorry you're suffering with this!!! Posted by Gabrielle (Member # 5329) on :
It's not always yeast. I have the same since years and also thought it was yeast. I spent a fortune on anti-yeast remedies until recently I finally went to the doc and had it examined. Result: NO YEAST. No bacteria grew in the petri dish either.
In the meantime I asked around and found several lymies who have the same (no yeast). I think it's some kind of bacteria that don't grow easily in the petri dish.
I'd have it examined.

i had that too and my llmd said oral thrush. gave me nystatin liquid and diflucan.
after a couple of weeks, nothing happened. back to doc, did throat culture and blood work, both came back negative.
she said it was still thrush, so now i'm on probiotics.
so crazy............

If you have Sjogren's (me too ) you are more suspectible to mouth issues (per my dentist who specializes in Sjoren's).
I was on Nystatin (pills) and diflucan and stll had mouth issues. white tongue, swelling on the sides.
He said it was a fungus (don't know the difference in fungus and yeast). He wrote a script for Chlorhexidine oral rinse. It seems to take care of it.
I now have it on hand when my mouth flares up. But, I must tell you I absolutely cannot eat sugar or refined carbs. Not even organic stuff like cereals, rice, etc. I pretty much eat chicken, vegetables and protein drinks. I do cheat and have coffee with my hubbie. If I cheat my mouth is swollen and raw within six hours.
Really a bummer but you play with the cards you are dealt! I believe one day I will be able to eat a little more normal. I have been on antibiotics, IV and oral for 3 1/2 years (with continual probiotics) so it's no wonder I am so yeasty.
Hope this helps. MA

Hi - I just answered an above post about yeast regarding the same topic.
I had the same prob as you and I traced it back to taking a lot of sulfur containing supplements ( includes glucosamine sulfate, MSM, methionine, taurine, cysteine / cystine.) Also garlic and onions.
Once I eliminated these supplements/foods from my diet my tongue (as well as some other symptoms) improved considerably. Just a thought....

Hello,
I have a yeasty mouth too -- comes with the territory of weeks/months of antibiotics.
But, why would taking sulfur-containing supplements make a difference? (MSM, garlic, etc.)
I am taking lots of those -- any insight is appreciated!

I just copied my response from another post about a yeasty tongue that is going on simultaneously.
Not sure of the exact chemistry/physiology behind sulfur and a coated tongue; my post below explains what I found somewhat.
I also had a coated tongue I thought was due to yeast overgrowth; it actually got much worse after I did 2 rounds of diflucan and had been off the antibiotics for several months (after on for 2 1/2 years);
diet and mycelex troches did nothing. Anyway, it just made no sense that my tongue coating would be getting worse when the yeast had been clearing up everywhere else...
I did some research - a white coated tongue can represent sulfur compounds produced by anaerobic bacteria(not yeast, but like when people have chronic halitosis)
My LLMD had me start taking a bunch of supplements containing sulfer or sulfer derivatives around the time this problem started.
When I stopped taking them my tongue improved significantly.
I had other symptoms I think were caused by too much sulfur as well that cleared up when I stopped all these supplements

crimininy!!! You are a medical wonder, hiker!

Hi Hiker
you may have a yeast infection thats resistant to diflucan.
You might want to ask your doc about liquid sporanox. It is a more wide spectrum anti-fungal and for cases of resistant yeast.
I noticed since I have changed my oral routine I have had alot less thrush. I also have Sjogrens too and thrush is a thing I have to be watchful of.
Everytime I brush my teeth I use a tongue scapper and after that use hard brisles brush tooth brushs on my tongue too, rinse well.
Then always open a capsule of aphodophillus and sprinkle on tongue & swish around . Because when you brush/mouthwash/ect.. it kills the good germs as well as the bad. It leaves a vacant field. Yeast loves this & moves right in.
Really really important to disinfect the scapper & brushs after every use.
hope this helps

I have a white tongue with yeast & thrush too for months at a time. Doesn't hurt. On Nystatin, probiotic, etc.
Try to stay away from sugar, but this weekend's diet went out the window! Bettyg Posted by Etta (Member # 1002) on :
Don't think white tongue is yeast. Ususally red tongue and throat is indicative of thrush (candida). But a teaspoon of tea tree oil in a cup of warm water, swished in the mouth, will provide instant relief of mouth, and other body parts, of yeast infection. My mom got it frequently while in the hospital during her final days. No doc. could clear it up, until I ran across the tea tree oil. It is anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, and provides "instant" relief of fungus infections, which is candida.

I KNOW it's not yeast in my case.
- the exame didn't find any yeast - I used to be always on a very strict anti-candida diet - I used lots of Nystatin which made it worse - I used Diflucan which did nothing - I used lots of good and expensive probiotics - I used oregano oil - I used olive leaf - I used cloves and cinnamon - I used hydrogen peroxide - I used a tongue scraper - I even imported Colorex from New Zealand - I used a mix of ozonized essential oils that are said to work miracles against yeast - there was probably more that I have forgotten.
Nothing helped but it's far better now since I'm off abx.
The story with the sulphur is interesting as I'm eating lots of garlic and onions. And I used to eat lots of eggs (which I gave up at around the same time when I stopped abx as I found out that I'm intolerant to eggs). I will follow this trace ....

Have you tried oil pulling?

First, I'm NOT a medical professional nor am I versed in this topic. But each week since prior to my diagnosis, I've received acupuncture treatment. Even with my Lyme-brain some things my acupuncturist has discussed have sunk in.
My acupuncturist does a tongue evaluation at every session, because in traditional Chinese medicine, the tongue can be a good indicator of overall health.
In my instance, my tongue is currently both white and scalloped (also slightly swollen) which indicates an energy deficiency. I think other symptoms of this are a lack of motivation, slight depression and increased sensitivity to cold (get cold more easily).
I'm not sure what this means in terms of treatment. What my acupuncturist does is adjust sessions and the Chinese herbs I take according to dx of tongue and overall symptoms.
This is a very different way of looking at things than Western medicine, but I've found good results from my acupuncturist's evaluations and treatments.

Sounds like it's yeast since it's better now that you're off abx. If you used liquid Nystatin, that is why it didn't work. It contains sugar.
So how are you feeling off abx!!? Good !!? Posted by Gabrielle (Member # 5329) on :
Lymetoo,
in a way I feel better without abx - in another way I feel worse. I don't feel toxic anymore, head is mostly okay but got lots of pain symptoms back.
I didn't stop abx because I thought I was cured (which I am definitely not) but because I wanted to heal my leaky gut.
After 6 weeks another Lymie convinced me to start an alternative treatment with a naturopath who is convinced that the main culprit is yeast. This guy is said to have big success.
Well, the other Lymie is feeling well now since about two months - starts to believe she is cured.
Myself, I got all my symptoms back. Will see this naturopath on Friday and depending if he can convince me or not I will continue or I'll run back on abx as fast as I can.
Still think it's not yeast on my tongue. I cannot scrape it off as I should be able to if it was yeast.

Some antibiotics can cause a build-up on the teeth, so perhaps they can do it on the tongue too. It's not yeast.
When I was on Doxycycline, I got all this white plaque built up on my teeth (I never had dental problems before - I'm the daughter of a dentist).
The dental hygienist said it looked like I had sweaters on my teeth. I had to start going in very frequently for teeth cleaning.
My Lyme doctor said that it was being caused by the Doxycycline, not yeast. I've talked to other Lyme patients that have had this from antibiotics.
So I'm wondering if your tongue issue could be related to what many of us have experienced with our teeth, of this white build-up from the antibiotics.
Just a thought.

Gabrielle...maybe it will work later when you get your bacterial load down more.
