My LLMD would like me to begin taking part of the Marshall protocol: Benicar, Actos (pioglitazone), and cholestyramine.
I've found herbs always work better for me, but can't find any documentation of any that do exactly what these drugs are being used for.
Anyone have any herbs that I can substitute?
I was on Actos a while back, and had horrible weight gain and fatigue.
Thank you for your help.

For more information about the marshall protocol, go to www.marshallprotocol.com. There is much more to the mp than Benicar.
Also, I am not sure how much is known about how these other drugs and herbs interact with the mp. I have not followed it for over a year, but at least at that time, marshall would not entertain modifications/additions, and was only willing to help people who followed the protocol to the letter.
Perhaps things have changed, but you would be wise to proceed very carefully. If your doc has not already done so, have him/her call marshall to discuss anything he/she wants to do with you that is not part of the standard protocol.

Just curious, are you underweight? Can't understand why the Actos would cause weight gain. This drug is given to diabetics and people with hypoglycemia (pre-diabetes or syndrome X). It should make the insulin receptors work better and theoretically cause weight loss or at least prevent weight gain.

I recently started actos and questran (part of Dr. Shoemaker's protocol for neurotoxins) via my LLMD and so I checked out the side effects of questran. Seems like a LOT of people gain weight on it. There is also a listed side effect of weight gain that looks like it might be caused by fluid.
I have major fluid retention problems already and expected some real problems with this medication but so far, no problem and I've been on it for 3 weeks. Terry
Edited: I meant to say that a lot of people gain weight on actos from what I've read.

Ask your doctor for the rationale behind the MP for your specific circumstances. I have not seen the MP work for many people with Lyme and many LLMDs have commented the same. Does he have a base of patients that he has used it on that had results that were acceptable?
