I found this to be incredibly interesting, perhaps some others here will too.

I have Lyme (diagnosed approx. 2 yrs ago - I had been sick approx. 3 years prior to diagnosis) and am certain that I contracted it on my property in my home state of Alabama.

Now one of my dogs has perianal fistulas (PFs) and I've just read a recent veterinary article about new findings that dogs presenting with PF should be screened for Babesia as it may be one cause for PF in dogs!

Here's an exerpt from that article: DISCUSSION Three canine cases of anal furunculosis/fistulas, all associated with Babesia spp. , have been described. The first two dogs were German sheperds, where the disease is common - as already noted - for breed and predisposing anatomical factor of the low tail carriage. The third dog, in which the condition had produced a gross mutilation (fall of the tail), was a Pomeranian. All three animals benefited from therapy with imidocarb dipropionate, with no associated treatment (systemic, topical or dietary).

How interesting that I have lived on this property (16 acres, of which 12 is wooded) for 7 years and this pooch has lived here his entire life and he may also have a disease caused by a tick bite.

And "they" say this disease isn't in Alabama! [bonk]

Does anyone know what imidocarb dipropionate is? I haven't Googled it yet!

That IS interesting.

And, as a babesia sufferer, I am relieved to find that the babesia causes the canine perianal fistulae, and, um... not the other way around! That could raise some eyebrows.... [Wink]
