Why are antimalarials taken with other antibiotics?

Now the obvious answer might be for "broader coverage".

What I want to know is must we? Does the die off from Babs cause such secondary infections as to require a back up antibiotic?

I asked my LLMD this and he was unsure.

What about Artminisin? I hear from many that to do any good it must be taken with an antibiotic.

I have both Quinine and Plaquenil. I had some heart issues with Biaxin, gut issues with clindimycin. I also have Artminisin.

I feel paralyzed over what to do next.

I also rife.

Thank-you-so-much!

I've heard it was because the babs will become resistant otherwise. Never made any sense to me though!

Artemisinin is great! Take it with something like zith. It might be OK with clindamycin, but I don't know for sure.

Hopefully, others will have some ideas for you!

Hey Bug, malaria has built tolerance to quinine and as such with babs being protozoan in nature, an abx is given with mepron to prevent the same thing happening.

Additionally, adding an abx to the mix [normally zithromax] helps keep lyme and bart at bay while the babs is being treated.

I'd recommend adding artemisinin to your zithromax and mepron. Just watch the herx's.
Plaquenil and malarone can be used in place of mepron.

Where can you get the artemisinin? My husband's LLMD is starting him on zith/mepron tomorrow. He didn't mention Art and I forgot to ask. Should we check with him first?

Artemisinin is available from many health food stores or mail order vitamin companies. A good source for low cost high quality supplements is:

Nutricology is a good brand -- doctors sell the same product under the Allergy Research label.

One more question . . . how much artemisinin should he take? He's on 600 mg of zith and 2 tsp daily of mepron.

My plan is to start out with 100 mg 2 tabs the first day to see how I react. If no allergic reaction then I will build up to 6 per day.

There are other approaches such as taking big doses for 3 days as pulse therapy.

Lots of posts on this board in regard to dosages.
