I went to a friends house last weekend and her dog was sick. Based on our conversationand seeing the dog, I thought the dog might have lyme. Vet confirmed Lyme yesterday. Aso, the dog has ankolysing spondylitis and erlichia.
The vet and my friend seem to think these are urelated.
The 64 lb.dog is on doxy 3-100mg one time per day (28 day course) and metacam for pain. Sounds like a good dose of doxy but I am wondering if the dog needs a secod ABX perhaps a macrolide i.e Zith, Biaxin, Ketek.
I think the AS is the result of a weakend immune system from the Lyme. I have read there is some thought that AS is caused by an opportunistic bacteria that is usually harmless, but with Lyme in the system we know what happens.
Does anyone have experience in dealing with this in a dog?
Any insight /help would be much appreciated.

I know nothign about AS or erlichea in dogs.
My Aussie had Lyme (primary symptom was going lame). After just a few days on the abx, he improved dramatically but we kept the treatment going for another month, just to be sure.
He did develop stomach problems with whatever abx he was first on, but those went away when we changed medicine.
Not sure if this helps, but I hope your friend's dog gets better!

Robi, I have 'heard' that dogs respond to treatment much more quickly and completely than humans do. Wonder why that is true?? Nother of the mysteries of lyme. HTH,-d-

Hi robi,
I'm interested in finding out if ankolysing spondylitis could be caused by Lyme disease. I have a friend who has many symptoms of Lyme disease, and ankolysing spondylitis.
His dad also has numerous LD symptoms. They've both had the ELISA antibody titer tests, so they have a false sense of security they don't have LD.

Hi Robi, Im a newbie to the site and Lyme. I have a 16 year old Jack Russell Terrier, that was diagnosed with Anklosing Spondylitis five years ago. Before she was diagnosed she had a terrible high fever and afterwards suffered foot drop and limp, tremors etc. She was given Rimadyl steroids. I left her on them for about a year,as recommended by the vet, then weaned her off as they seemed to be doing more harm than good.
At the same time as she got ill, I got optic neuritis! I think she has Lyme too.
I treated her with Glucosamine and Fish Oil and she is still doing well, alot of improvement.
Hope your friends dog improves soon.
