My dh was just put on zith/mepron for his babesia. The doctor didn't say anything about artemisin and I didn't ask. Is it necessary? Is this something that people are doing because their doctor prescribed it or because they've read about it here?
I'm not really understanding how the Mepron kills the babesia - mepron isn't an anti-parasitic, is it?
But arteminsin is???

From what I understand, and I could be totally wrong, the mepron actually kills the parasite in the red blood cells. The zith prevents resistance, and the art stops the parasite from jumping to your other non-infective cells. Like I said this could be wrong, but it is what I was told. Good luck.

I don't know, but I think it works GREAT!!! I didn't try it until 2 yrs ago. Worked like a charm!

I believe Dr. Burrascano's Guidelines recommend Mepron/Zith/Artemisinin.
Still, some docs are not adding in the Art, which is concerning.
Which is why I'm glad patients are reading LymeNet -- so they can ask their doctor about adding Art to their anti-babesia regimen!
