Hello lymies,

My dd is sick again...fever, headaches, stomach aches, and constipation. She's just miserable.

I took her to the doctor today. She was diagnosed with a syndrome that consists of migraines, mitral valve prolapse, and irritable bowel syndrome. He said this also explains the movement disorder...he said it occurs when she gets a build-up of CO2/hyperventilates after exertion ???? He thinks if she holds her breath the next time one starts it willl make it go away. It doesn't make much sense to me.

He gave her a Rx for an irritable bowel drug...it was very expensive. He wants her to use miralax & wants to see her again in 2 weeks.

Her abdomen was soft, so he didn't think she'd have a difficult time passing the back-log. He called & got the x-ray report (full colon, but no distension and no sign of blockage). He did more bloodwork and a Lyme titer. I related my concern of a partial obstruction.

This doesn't explain her fever & headache...I just assumed it indicated toxicity due to the constipation.

Could this be due to Lyme?

Nancy, have you been reading any of the posts here on celiac disease or gluten intolerance?

Have you had her tested for food allergies? In my NON-MEDICAL opinion, the irritable bowel etc. sounded like me and I learned I was allergic to

gluten: wheat & rye

casein- cow's milk, cheeses, egg whites, & garlic

Good luck to her on getting better soon!

Hello Bettyg,

This is the only time she's ever had a problem with constipation. I think it resulted from not giving herself enough time in the morning to get ready for school...she won't eat breakfast first, but waits until the last minute to eat, then rushes out the door. She needs time to sit a while.

I have considered gluten intolerance. She has trouble digesting pancakes and wheat cereal.

Several years ago I had to go gluten free, dairy free, soy free for the sake of another very allergic breastfeeding child.

That was a very difficult diet, but was very helpful. That's when I first learned about gluten intolerance and leaky gut.

Thanks for the suggestion Betty. I'll talk to dd about it.

Hey Nancy, Sorry your dd is having so much trouble. Thought I'd share with you what I do for constipation.

Natural Calm is a magnesium powder that you mix with hot water and sip it like tea. This really works for me. If she'll take it, it might work for her too. The extra magnesium won't hurt her either. Just start with a little bit because too much gives me diaherra [Frown]

Nancy, I'm sorry to hear about your dd. Is she having any other effects from the MVP?

I just wanted to share that her experience sounds weirdly similar to mine when I was a child, and initially infected. After numerous trips to Children's Hospitals around the world, I was diagnosed w/ MVP, IBS, etc - and told the same thing about hyperventilation and holding my breath! It made no sense then either.

The constipation issue, at the time, was handled by my old-fashioned mom, who increased my fiber intake - I ate peanut butter on celery for lunch all year - but there are better options available now. The diets already mentioned sound helpful.

My LLMD did think all of this was Lyme-related, if that's any help to you. Hopefully it will resolve with abx.

Nancy,

Am so sorry she is having so many difficulties.

Did the doc tell you the name of this symdrome?

As far as hyperventilating ... what is happening is that her lungs are blowing OUT too much CO2 to compensate for rapidly breathing in too much O2, due to the fact that the gas exchange (O2 -- CO2) is more than is metabolically necessary.

You break the cycle by lowering your O2 intake / increasing CO2 ... this is the classic "breathe into a paper bag" thing. I guess holding breathe would do about the same thing, but seems like it would be hard to hold your breath if you are hyperventilating.

The movement disorder / hyperventilation is called "hyperventilation tetany", characterized by muscle twitches, cramps or spasms due to abnormally low CO2 from hyperventiliation.

Hope that was helpful.

Hayley
