Can lyme cause blood in your stool? I've already seen a gastroenterologist who says my system is clean of GI disease. what else can it be? If lyme does cause blood in your stool, how is it doing this?

Lyme can do alot of things, but I would urge you to call your GI dr again and tell him about the blood.

I've already had an endoscopy and colonoscopy which ruled out any thing in the gastroenterologists' speciality.

Hi, Any bleeding needs to be reported to a doctor.
In the meantime, Record your diet, all foods, drinks, snacks, etc.
Record when blood appeared, and observations: pain burning, color, coverage and shape on stool, , straining, spastic release, etc.
Also, most GI's are not versed in parasites. I would search for a ND or alternative type OD, who can run more comprehensive stool tests, including parasites, bowel flora, etc. They will also search for possible dietary allergens that may be causing inflammation.
That's all I can come up with.

a small intestine study means you swallow a camera the size and shape of a capsule. On teh way through your GI tract it takes a huge amount of photos-not sure how many-maybe a couple a second.
When it comes out the other end docs will than be able to see whats going on in the small bowel since no other GI test can show this. The only other thing that looks at small bowel is a barium CT Scan...but these aren't as good as the capsule camera.

If your stool is hard, it can tear the little blood vessels on the way out and cause bleeding.
Occasionally that happens to me. I also have hemorrhoids from having children I guess and I think they can do the same thing. (Isn't all this personal sharing fun???)
Anyway, it happens to me once in awhile when the stool is hard and then stops. It helps me to drink more water.

I ended up having bleeding after four months of being acutely ill. I had been through a barium CT scan of my lower intestinal tract.
I was under the care of a Gastroenterologist and had a colonoscopy and endoscopy...
once I started treatment for babesia, lyme and ehrlichia the rectal bleeding went away.
I have talked to another person with lyme who had surgery for the bleeding she was having before she finally was diagnosed and got proper treatment.
I do believe that these infections can cause rectal bleeding - my dog suffered from it the month before I got sick. Turns out she has lyme and ehrlichia...she has only been tested once for babesia and it was negative but I suspect she has it.

I don't know about blood in the stool, but in dogs, Babesia can cause blood and bilirubin to spill over into the urine.
And that may support what Lymied just posted.
Barring hard stool, hemorrhoids, or a problem in the small intestine, I would be inclined to suspect Babesia.

I once had blood in stool. Had prior Gastro work ups, but when the blood happened the stool itself was tested and it turned out to be CDIFF. Meds such as Flagal or Vancomycin are used the latter one helped me the most.

I'd definitely get checked for C Difficile if i were you-- it can cause blood and/or pus in the stool. We foks on longterm abx are at a high risk for it. If that is negative, I'd get a second opinion on the whole gastro-health issue. Occult blood is never a good thing.

Babesia also some believe can cause Perianal Fistulas in dogs...lovely I know...hope you are not trying to eat dinner and reading this.
They are cancerous like sores around the anal area and they bleed. It is horrible!!!!
I had my issues with rectal bleeding four months into acute illness having not had any antibiotics for the treatment of lyme or anything prior. I literally had only taken antibiotics maybe five times in my entire life before this lyme hit the fan.
Mine was not CDiff because they did every occult test known to man.
I do believe there is a connection but like minimonkey and LadyLee mentioned it could be other very nasty infections so better to get it checked out by a Gastro too with stool tests.

I've had blood in stools over the past ten years or so with lyme.
No ducks have ever figured out what it was....
Probably cuz they were not listening to me and testing for the right stuff...

Hemorrhoids...weakened blood vessels that buldge and break are ususally the cause.
Sudden huge amts. of blood might indicate a rupture of a diverticulitis (outpouching). Serious,immediate threat due to tremendous loss of blood. Surgery fixes.
That's not to say more serious things can be happening (cancer), but the most common cause is hemorrhoids which are VERY common. They are not all "external" and "obvious".
Try to keep your stools soft with Metamucil, for example.

I was told that if it is RED blood it is probably from hemoroids,
if it was a darkened blood that was more internal bleeding.
Not sure if this is exactly what they said, it may make sense to someone, if it is correct.
