I've stayed so busy and wrapped up lately (months) that I am not getting any exercise. BAD stress.. and bad diet... and bad at taking care of ME!

So last Sunday I decide to get out of the ice cream bowl and get back to the program.

After spending my entire life exercising.. I've realized I've kinda gotten really tired of it. So I will need a kick in the caboose to get going and STAY at it.

I would like to start a mini-support group here so we can encourage each other to exercise... and MAYBE then I can stick to it... with your help.

So put on your caboose kicking boots and join me.

OK?

Since it is my post.. I get to say what I did FIRST!

[Big Grin]

Today.. well yesterday, cause it is after midnight...

I walked a mile!

That is the first time I've done that in several years!

[woohoo]

How about YOU?

Good idea,

This week, I have been going for a 1/2 hour/1 hour walks on alternate days and on the other alternate days doing about 20-30 minutes of light weights and resistance exercises.

Tonight, went to our local hospital where they had an evening educational program on CELIAC DISEASE.

Walked the 3 blocks roundtrip using my cane. Left leg barely works anyone; hard to get up/down, but I try.

lifting weights -- my 32 oz. water mug 5-6x daily! lol [Big Grin]

I used to walk every coffee break and lunch hour but before I left work 8 yrs. ago in Dec., I could barely walk at all with both feet having spurs/fascilles, sp tendons!

Can't swim; chemicals do me in!

Way to go TC on walking 1 mile; just put my name on your back and I've walked with you too ok! [Big Grin]

Yesterday I went for a walk round the large block and also did some stretches and toning exercises for my back and stomach !!! First for a couple of weeks so am feeling happy about that !

Yesterday I went for a walk after dark; beautiful starry sky, the moon was up, crispy cold air, beautiful dark lake - and plenty of cars on the road next to it. [Big Grin]

was about 1/2 hour walk, wonderful!

i used to ride a stationary bike at least 10 miles a day, 20 if i was in a rut and trying to lose weight. tried several times to get back on and the pain just pushing the petal around once made me not go any further. feed up with my weight gain associated with lyme and not wanting to do anything. 4 days ago i was bound and determined to get back on that bike. the first mile feels like hell, but it gets better the further you go. to date 3 days in a row 5 miles, last night 6. i guess it is a start. good luck to all of you also.

My coworker and I were getting a tutorial on the new copy machine, and the installer was explaining that this model can also be a computer printer, and a fax, all from the desk top computer.

So I joked, "So, if i don't have to leave my chair, how am I ever going to get any exercise?"

My co-worker said, "Go to the bathroom!"

ROFL, little did she know how true that can be for some of us Lymies when we are ill. Getting to the bathroom becomes like a triathlon.

As for me, I exercise at least 5 times a week, since my non-office job is coaching gymnastics. I often do the warm-ups with them, and demonstrate the easier skills. The only thing I want to add is a walking program, but I am watching the fatigue since I already work physically so much.

One-a these days, I am gonna print out a "Lyme friendly" warm-up and stretch sheet. I got to do one at the Lyme retreat a couple of years back, and we had fun!

Take care,
Shaz

Well thankfully I am finally able to exercise again. During the first 2 years of Lyme, exercise wiped me out completely. It would take weeks to recover from each attempt. Stretching would cause immediate herxing. At first I thought I was lazy ot unmotivated, but NO, Lyme simply made it impossible to exercise, as I got a little better it was impossible to exercise AND function. Suddenly one day I felt different and could exercise without feeling awful.

Yesterday I walked up & down hills for 20 minutes. When I woke up in the middle of the night as usual I did crunches & leg lifts. This helps me get back to sleep.

This morning I'm going to do 22 minutes on the ski machine & 10 minutes of stretching. Then I'll walk to all my appointments. This will be approx 1 1/2 hours of walking today.

I'll be hiking this weekend ( with pants tucked into socks...)

I resumed exercise approx 6 weeks ago and am more toned & feeling stronger. I have stopped gaining weight and hopefully will start losing soon.

Will rake some leaves today..Will that count..The last 2 weeks have had tons of running around with some community events.

Shaz, be careful with the gymnastics..I have some old battle scars coming back to haunt me from spotting some kids and getting kicked, etc..But I never had a child get hurt, so thank God for that.. But it is all part of the job for the coach.

Tin, keep up the good work..lymemomtooo

Every morning I do 20 mins Yoga and I am kinda, sorta, thinkin' about workin' on, getting ready to maybe motivate myself to do more. [Smile]

Beyond that, I own two horses and see them at least 3x weekly. On the days they don't come running to me, I walk over the hills and meadows to them. So I get that exercise, then I start to groom them and the real exercise begins. Just try holding up the foot of a 1000lb animal who thinks you are a leaning post. Then hoist a 35 lb saddle up over your head onto their back and tighten the girth. Now haul your big butt up onto their back and the rest is easier, though not as easy as it looks. It takes leg and butt muscles to balance as they move and hand/wrist action to guide them with the reins. Good exercise mentally and physically as I really love them!

I did an hour of yoga yesterday. It was my easy yoga class. Hopefully I'll get out of work in time for the hard class tonight.

Today I tuned into Denise Austin and did the warm-up, butt-work and cool-down with her; skied on the Nordic Trak during her cardio-lite because I'm not coordinated enough for some of her "dance-like" moves and do not want a black-eye.

Tomorrow is Bow-Flex day; I alternate between the two and sometimes kick in a bike ride or 2 mile walk in my neighborhood. I have a 15% slope to hike if I elect to go that way.

My knees and bottoms of feet are tender when I sit or wake from sleep. About 3 minutes of moving, it goes away.

Good job to all you getting out and moving...I try to walk a mile and a half 5 days a week at 6 am. Since I was diagnosed (3 months ago) I have only made 5 days once. This week if I make it tomorrow, it will be the second. I also work with a trainer 2 times a week. It has been very rough going since dx but, The doctors all tell me to not stop, no matter how bad I feel. They suggest I make the duration shorter or the intensity less, but keep going. Of course it is easy for them to say. To all- Keep Moving!

Wow! I feel so inferior to you all. The pain in my legs is debilitating....so much so that it is the ultimate struggle on some days just to get moving to make dinner.

Two days ago I decided to walk around my complex. I did 15 minutes in the morning and 15 at night. The next day I was in so much pain it was literally unbearable. But tonite, I will get back up on the horse and try again.

It is depressing to say the least since my usual routine was 2 hours a day of exercise 6 days a week.

YAY! Thanks TinCup for starting this thread. This has been one of my bigger challenges lately.

I was a runner in college, then a rower. I have an indoor ergometer and had not been on it since getting sick 2 1/2 years ago. I started back about three weeks ago with fifteen minute intervals with my heart monitor.

I have been walking, trying fifteen minutes everyday although I have been a bit irregular about it. What I do is where my heart monitor and take the first 7 1/2 minutes to hit my target heart rate with rehabilitation figured in to that number and then the remaining 7 1/2 minutes I bring my heart rate back down.

I also got the opportunity to swim laps in a pool that is using the new saline method of sanitation instead of chlorine. It was awesome but I haven't found one where I live that is close by yet.

It is very hard to start exercising after having been one to challenge myself everytime I exercised and I rarely understood gentle exercise. Some days literally it is just so hard to face my body where it is now post lyme. Some times I cry, sometimes I get sad but I am really trying to just keep keeping on.

Knowing you all are climbing the same mountains sure helps me [Wink] One foot in front of the other...

yesterday-light house keeping & walked around my driveway twice.

On a good day I love the excercise tape "start-up, with Jane Fonda"

The beginning can be done sitting in a chair and the end can be done in bed. My LLMD suggested it back in 95. Its for people recvoering from a chronic illness.

Its real low impact but does help me with muscle tone, strengthening, stretching-(inparticular the back muscles) When I am good with using it my back pain is better.

I listen to my body gererally and it lets me know how much to do on a given day.

You're not inferior. Most of us have been in a similar spot to you.

I found pain management crucial to my being able to get back to exercise. And then, in turn, the exercise became crucial to pain management.

I was on muscle relaxers for over 2 years and take Vicodin when I need it. When I first got back into yoga, I was in pain for 2 days following a workout. My body eventually adjsuted.

WOW! Look at you all trying!

VERY inspirational!!!

Yes .. it is hard. And some days you can do one thing.. other days barely anything.

And what gets me.. in weight lifting.. which I am not doing now...

I can do the same exact routine one day... and do it for weeks. Then suddenly, one day out of the blue... that same routine nearly kills me. Why? I don't know.

Today for exercise:

After having my first night in a LONG time where I was extremely exhausted but could not sleep...

This morning I crawled half way down the stairs.

The other half of the stairs I rolled down.

[bonk]

Something tells me that MILE I bragged about MIGHT have caused me to stiffen up like the Tin man on the Wizard of OZ. Ya think?

Oil can... oil can....

May I suggest..

START SLOW!

uggggggggggggggggggg....

[Big Grin]

Will report back later IF I am able to do anything more than wiggle across the floor today!

Keep posting. Your info helps me and others.

Tincup,

Sounds like you might need some detoxing. Have you been drinking plenty of water?

I know yoga releases toxins from our muscles and you want to drink lots of water to move them out after a workout.

I'd give you a muscle relaxer if it weren't illegal. [Wink]

A...

Yes.. I am full of garbage.. and have been for years. I also just did too much the first day out.

Not as bad this evening though.. so I should hit the trail tomorrow... but not as hard. I will drink more water.. you are right about that. Thanks!

Anyone else have reports today.. or did we all sleep in?

TC,
I cannot excersize right now but know from past experience I had to start extraordinarily slow.

Take what you think you can do and divide by 5-10.

When I was initially treated and was well enough to attempt excersize I went to a PT who started me on 3 of each excersize 2x/day.

It sounded so pathetic...

but Pete was right, that was plenty! He held me back from seriously over doing it. It took a long time to build up but it worked.

So go back out tomorrow if you feel you're ready but maybe go to the corner and back. [Wink]

I ran errands, vacuumed the WHOLE house and cleaned one and a half bathrooms!!

I am totally wiped out and in a LOT of pain. I think I over did it. How depressing compared to 2 years ago when I finished my first mini-triathlon.

[Roll Eyes]

Two weeks ago I was safety pinned to the bed by my catheter. (as in the pee bag was safety pinned to the side of the bed so it could drain properly) Makes running errands seem like a marathon!

Just keep THINKING about exercising then! Maybe it will lift your mood!!

At one time, for months at a time, my only exercising was getting off the couch and flopping into the chair to get on Lymenet and forget my worries and pain.

It worked!! [well, sorta! [Wink] ]

in April I stopped my meds because I felt so good, symptom free etc. I bought a bicycle (very cool street bike). I regularly biked 17 miles - once 27 miles... And it's all hilly here in Massachusetts. Ok, my biking buddies killed me, I was definately the weak link, but still, life was good!

Now I am relapsing and it's all over. I will get back on the bike in spring though...

hatsnscarfs, so good to hear you're doing so much better! Ain't it great to have your body respond the way it used to?

Lymemomtoo, I've had my share of booboos from the kiddoos, mostly superficial. Had a bar fall on my finger once -- yeowch! Had an interesting talk with the walk-in doc, who was offering the Lymerix vaccine at the time....

breezywings, don't sweat it! (pardon the pun [Big Grin] ) Would you do aerobics with the flu? Well, Lyme is the same way -- when you're sick, you need to rest so your body can fight the disease.

A couple of years ago, I was packing for a move out of state, and stayed up late getting things done. The next morning, the pain in my feet was so bad, I couldn't walk! I would hobble a couple of yards, then sit and instruct the movers on what to do. Didn't look much like a dancer that day!

And yeah, Tinwoman -- detox! My favorites: a hot bath, detox tea, or enough of a workout to break a sweat, which doesn't take much effort if I'm in the yucks!

Take care,
Shaz

Let's see - six minutes of rebounding (I'm new to it), Ai Chi in the pool for 50 minutes, then 20 minutes on the treadmill.

How's that? I only get to the pool twice a week, so usually walk about 40-45 minutes either outside or on the treadmill on the other days.

Who's stupid idea was it to start a post about exercising?

Oh.. never mind!

[Big Grin]

Well.. It IS working!

Knowing I'd have to reply here today... and knowing after all the stress I have been under... I HAD to walk the walk! Or be shamed by you all.

But, whine, whine, whine..

It was 50 degrees outside.. and I wore shorts!

It was breezy too.. and I wore shorts!

Half the walk was in the shade making it even colder.. and I wore shorts!

Wahhhhhh.. wahhhhhhh.. wahhhhhhh

The bright sun hurt my eyes cause I waited for the warmest part of the day and the sun was low in the sky and right in my face!

My shoes (I'm usually ALWAYS barefoot) didn't feel good and made my feet hurt!

I didn't stop to smell the roses.. cause I was near a jogging pace... because it was so cold... and I wore shorts!

BUT.. know what?

I DID IT!

[Big Grin]

Thanks for MAKING me exercise. It works!

Now.. who's next?

[Big Grin]

PS... Next time..

I don't think I will wear shorts.

I'm about as pleased as punch with myself. We're having beautiful weather here in the northeast and peak or near-peak foliage. Yesterday, I did a 4 mile walk around the lake at Sterling Forest Park in Tuxedo NY. We sat in the sun and ate a picnic lunch on a sandy little beach at one end of the lake. This is a beautiful park. Even if you can't do much, just go to the visitor's center which is a beautiful site itself, and the view of the lake from the center is breathtaking. Today I'm going to do a 12 mile bike ride on a rail trail (flat). BTW, I just started drinking mangosteen this week. (Vitamin Shoppe just came out with their own brand, running a promotion $9.99/bottle.) Could be coincidence, could be a number of things together, but this is one of the best weeks I've had in a very long time. Pinch me pinch me. Or I just might wake up from this dream.

Ok- as you might know I've been feeling pretty good for the past four months or so.

I went sailing on Saturday, three races on a 24 footer. I DID NOT wear shorts, but long johns and foulies. I came home and napped in the hot tub for an hour before sleeping like a rock. All the critters came in bed, the house was cold.

Hauling firewood to the porch this morning. Taking a break, the critters were sitting in the sun watching me!

I have discovered that work/exercise is really good for helping me sleep.

Well back to work-

Good for you all!!! I'm impressed.

Seems so many of us are at different levels. I can't keep up (activity wise) with so many out there.. but then I think.. oh well.. I can do what I can do. As long as I keep trying.. that is what counts.

You all are keeping me inspired.. which is EXACTLY what I need.

So if you are of the mind set where you fall out of the chair to see the activity level of others doing so much... and you can't... not to worry. There have been MANY days I couldn't sit up in bed.. so anything else is gravy.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!! Did I mention FOOD?

[Eek!]

Ok.. time to practice my dance. There are a couple of Lyme conference coming up... and the President's of ILADS and LDA have both asked me to dance on stage for the crowds.

And yes, silly.. they want me to dance with my hat with fruit on it!

My partner? Geeze.. I don't know. I am being flooded with emails begging me to pick them... all the LLMD's ya know.. and it IS hard to pick just one.

Does shopping count? All that walking around and picking up pretty things. Now that I don't get panic attacks and dizziness in big places, I love to shop, even if I don't buy anything.

Just in case it doesn't, tonight I rebounded for 20 minutes and then ran a mile on a treadmill.

If shopping therapy counts, you'll be glad to know I do it on a regular basis. And on my off nights, squeeze in the boring type of exercise. (but I highly recommend shopping therapy). [Big Grin]

Hey there Tinny,

Glad you posted this. A friend of mine called around 4 this afternoon and wanted me to go to the park with my dog and take a walk.

I had to pass. Been on an additional blood pressure med since Friday and am not functioning to well.

But this post is encouraging and I'll try to walk my dog tomorrow so he won't be so cranky.

Hard to believe I used to do an awful lot of hiking in AK. Still have some of my gear. I just can't part with it.

Sure is hard for some of us to start out slow.
I use to only have two gears, fast and sleep!! You know how that is I'm sure.

Keep up the good work and I'll try tomorrow. [Smile]

Hats here checking in to say the hiking went great this weekend. Yes that was me on the trail with the giant sun hat, bandana & gloves. My nose got kinda red from the sun despite the hat.

I did 90 mins on Saturday & 2 hrs of steeper terain on Sunday These were the first hikes in at least 10 years where my knees didn't hurt at all. I felt great while hiking AND I felt great after. I didn't have the rush of toxins, sudden herxing, extreme fatigue, nerve pain or any of the other symptoms that used to cascade in right after any exertion.

Today I'm tired, worked from home, had to nap for an hour and now I'm going to haul myself into the tub for an Epsom soak. Taking a day off from exercise. Will resume tomorrow.

Wishing I felt better today but happy with my progress considering that 2 years ago just tying my hiking boots would have wiped me out. Last spring I was able to do easy short hikes but really paid the price after.

For those who are where I was a few years back I recommend supported yoga. I got the book Relax & Renew. Just walking to my bed to get a pillow to use for the pose was tough back then. I did feel better when I did the poses. Now they seem incredibly easy but back then it was a lot harder to do one simple stretch than it is to hike today. I've had to ramp up very slowly from doing 2 legs lifts to walking a little, to stretching.... Sometimes I thought I was lazy but looking back I know I wasn't. I was too sick to move at all.

Now it seems like the exercise is essential to get the rest of the ketes out of hiding. Hoping to be able to do 4 hour hikes in the Spring.

hey lymeinhell

shopping counts. Theres alot of walking involved in shopping [Smile]

Went to the grocery store.

Any body else but does the grocery store suck the life blood out of ya?

You have to walk around-lift all the stuff onto the belt-back into your car-and then home-into the cabinets.

I think grocery shopping should be considered an olympic event. [Smile]

I need a nap [sleepy]

Walked to the car. Drove 35 miles to work. Worked 9 hours then drove 35 miles home.

Hit the rebounder for 30 minutes and another 15 minutes of abs.

I REALLY much prefer shopping physical therapy.

(And I got rid of grocery shopping duty to hubby when I was too sick to push the cart. Always hated it anyway - guilt made him take over. Thank you Lyme disease - you actually did ONE thing for me [woohoo] )
