There has been some discussion recently about which drugs should be used in conjuction with Rifampin. Rifampin interacts with MANY MANY drugs including many ABX that are used to treat Lyme.

Azoles (floconazole (diflucan)) "Rifampin may induce the metabolism of Azole antifungal agents." It makes the azoles less effect for you. and also the Azoles may interfere with rifampin absorption decreasing the serum rifampin levels.

Doxycyline "rifampin may decrease the serum concentration and half-life of doxy possibly reducing the therapeutic effect."

Flouroquinolones (cipro, levaquin) Rifampin may acclerate the metabolism of these drugs = makes them go thru you body faster and therefore less effect/ blood levels drop too quickly.

Macrolides (biaxin, zithromax) The metabolism of rifampin may be inhibited while the metabolism of the macrolide may be increased. = you get less rifampin and more zith working fo you.

Rifampin also lowers levels and effectiveness of ESTROGENS,
QUININE DERIVATIVES,
PROGESTINS,
THYROID HORMONES,
BENZODIAZEPINES,
and other muscle relaxers and
anti-anxiety meds and
all pain relievers and narcotics are less effective while taking Rifampin.

Thanks...my wife has been on Rifampin for over a month and it has made her feel like crud! Gotta look towards the end result though [Smile]

Thanks for the reminder on the Rifampin interactions with other meds. I'm suppose to take it when I'm done with the babs treatment I'm doing now. I'm also on synthroid so I will have to check with Endro doctor or pharmacy before I start it. I had forgotten about it.
