I am curious if anyone having lost their ability to speak as a reslt of lyme(or almost lost it)recovered their voice after being treated with antibiotics? I am desperate for some HOPE! My speech is in BIG distress! Thx, Betsy

I'm really sorry to hear you're having so much trouble with your speech, though I'm not sure how that's been manifest.
When my Lyme was at its worst, I had a very difficult time speaking. I stuttered almost continuously; I couldn't form cohesive thoughts; I'd intend to say one thing and something entirely different would come out (which also happened iwth my writing).
These were all brand new symptoms, which I'd never dealt with in any degree previously.
After being on antibiotics (for Lyme and co-infections) for about a year, all those symptoms have reversed.
Again, I'm not sure what you're experiencing, but hopefully, as you get better, the problems will subside.

Betsy,
Yes, problems with speech was one of the worst, most troubling symptoms of lyme for me -- and like andie said, it reflected a disrupted thinking process caused by lyme.
I could not believe reading Andie's post, because I had the same exact experience -- I could not believe some of the things I said when at my worst in being ill with lyme. Felt like I had lost my voice entirely. Had some stuttering too.
In my experience, I can say there is great hope! Hang in there, although it can take time (months), these symptoms can improve and resolve with the right ABX. I have had great and increasing relief from abx, now in my fourth month of treatment after two years of suffering from this and other symptoms. Although I still am not 100%, I am much better than before taking doxy and amoxy.
Depending on how long you have been ill for, it seems that neurolyme can take time to heal. For me, I believe in trying anything possible, and I have been doing it all for four months -- supplements, herbs, abx, sauna's, more rest (when possible, difficult with working two jobs). Am going to try detox foot pads next! My slogan here has become -- By Any Means Necessary.
I hope you feel better soon and most important find a good LLMD that you have confidence in to work with on your path to recovery.

Vermont,
For the first 7 or 8 months that I was being treated, I used the detox foot pads every night.
I felt as if they helped, especially the pads I placed on my my toes. The toes are correlative to brain points in acupressure, I was told, so maybe that's why they seemed to help.
I had a hard time tolerating their smell so had to take a break. Now, I only use them about once a week or so.
I still have some problems with my writing -- thinking one thing and writing something viable but completely different. I guess it just takes time.
I was sick a LONGG time before I began treatment.

Hi all. I am a Speech Language Pathologist but haven't been able to work for approx 3 years due to Lyme. I've worked with all different ages and populations - children through geriatric. My specialty is adult language though. I would be glad to try to answer any questions about speech and language, cognitive problems etc or point you to some resources about these things. Just IM me. Hope I can help:)

Hi besty
I didn't lose my entire ability to talk but was stuttering, pausing, word searching, words & sentences backwards, ect..
After 3 years of tx, no more stuttering & a lot less word searching ect..
ps Hi Betsy
I went back & re-read your post. I think I may have mis-interperated your post. Is it your voice you are having problems with? Like in your vocal cords...or your speach? or both?

I am also a Speech Pathologist who has found it difficult to find words, form complete thoughts and speak. VERY SCARY!!!! This is getting better on antibx. Good thing I am not working now as I would have probably lost my job due to speech and language difficulties. Hang in there. Mine is slowly getting better.
Sincerely, Geneal

Thanks you guys...all the replies have been helpful. My actual ability to talk ie vocal chords is worse than my ability to articulate. But both are problems....just the loss of the ability to talk is scary and sad Hopefully more antibiotics will help restore it! Thanks for your encouragement! Betsy
