Well, I've been on 400mg daily of doxycycline and 250mg daily of metronidazal (flagyl) for a little over a week now. Guess what? I have thrush (I think).

Tongue is white, icky sweet/sour taste in mouth. White doesn't brush off w/ toothbrush easily. Noticed last night my tongue actually hurt a little.

Talked to my LLMD's nurse over the phone. She said take acidolpholus (probably butchered that spelling!)

I'm already taking 2 pills a day of Florastor.

She said she'd call in some Diflucan. I hate to take something else on top of what I'm already taking! I'm a walking pharmacy! Oh, yeah, forgot to mention I'm taking trazodone at night (that's another story) and magnesium glycinate twice a day.

Is there anything else I can do except take the diflucan??

Thanks!

stiner,

You could try some liquid nystatin for the thrush
if you dont want to take another pill. You swish
and spit. It seems to work. Used in hospitals for
thrush.

It certainly could be thrush, and some people recommend opening an acidophilus capsule and swishing it around the tongue and mouth.

But I also wanted to mention that Doxy, in particular, seems to cause a temporary build-up of plaque on the back of the teeth.

This happened to me and some Lyme pals of mine. I suddenly had to go to see the dental hygienist for frequent cleanings.

Finally, when I mentioned it to my LLMD, he said that Doxy can do that.

So just be aware that you may get some build-up on your teeth that isn't thrush, but plaque.

My son has it really bad right now and the doctor prescribed the liquid nystatin. He told us to have him swish and swallow and take this instead of the oral nystatin for a while.

Good Luck

Hey Stiner--You can also use tea tree oil in water as a mouthwash--it works wonders for some.

I would DEFINITELY get a hold of acidophilous--Florastor is NOT the same thing. It may help you with yeast but you need to build up your intestinal flora with good bacteria.

Good luck,

For a quick solution, Dr. Burrascano's "bible" says to fill your mouth with Listerine then stick in a toothbrush and scrub.

My daughter woke up one morning with a crappy mouth due to a throat lozenge that contained sugar.

For thrush Someone mentioned nystatin.

A natural treatment that helps too is tea tree oil helps. Just don't swallow any of it.

What has been helping me alot in keeping my thrush down is mouthwash & a tongue scaper . And then every time after mouthwash & brushing I open a capsule of aphodohillis & sprinkle it on my tongue & swish around.

The capsule is very important to add back in the good flora in the mouth. The mouthwash or any disinfecting agent like tea tree will kill the good flora & leaves an empty field where the yeast move in to take over.

And always disinfecting my toothbrush & tongue scaper after every use.

take care

None of this is medical advise, just my personal opinion

Before I even knew there was such a person as a LLMD, I had gone to my family Dr. He had put me on Doxycycline. About 10 days into treatment I also ended up with thrush.

Then.... finding a LLMD, he immediately had me take probiotics. I order them from their website
www.customprobiotics.com

the capsules are Acidophilus and Bifidus / high count, multi-strain, 35 Billion Microorganisms per capsule, Like everything else about this disease, they're not cheap.

and after my test had come back he added Nystatin, pill form. It took awhile to get back on track but this has worked for me.

So to recap it takes Money and patience, that's what I learned so far.

I hope you feel better soon. I HOPE WE ALL FEEL BETTER SOON.

You guys are great! Thanks for the quick responses.

I gather the liquid Nystatin is a perscription as opposed to OTC?

Jill, thanks for the warning on plaque. I'll watch for it.

Ashley, I had NO idea that Florastor was not acidophilous! Since I already have the Florastor, can I continue to take it and acidophilous at the same time?

I'll look for the tea tree oil that several of you have mentioned.

Thanks everyone! I'm learning more every day from you guys and gals!

Susan

I take probiotics AND Florastor - just at different times of the day.

My LLMD did say that Florastor is a good yeast that displaces and helps fight bad yeast.

But the main reason I take it is to help prevent an infection with the abbreviated name of C. Diff. that you can still get with Florastor, but it is one of the few things that is supposed to reduce the chance. Being on antibiotics can increase the risk of getting a C. Diff. infection, which you don't want.

Take care!

Hello Stiner!

The dreaded tongue coating!! Bleah!

I used to have that regularly.

Little matter what I did -- tongue scraping, swish & swallow Nystatin liquid, drown myself in yogurt, you name it.

Here's what helped:

http://www.theralac.com

Simply the best probiotic anywhere.

One a day, when you go to bed.

It will set your system right, repopulating you and your gut with the right type of flora to beat back the yeast beast almost overnight.

I first learned of it last year when my LLMD's office heard raves about it at the ILADS conference -- they have never pushed a single supplement on me and are very conservative, but this is one very amazing probiotic. Not cheap but leaves the others in the dirt.

If you do a search on here, you will find it has many devotees and with good reason!

As one who used to suffer constantly from exactly what you describe -- likely due to my less-than-perfect adherence to the 'no carb' thing, I can tell you that once you try this, you will never go back!

(Usual disclaimers, no I am not affiliated with them, blah blah blah!!)

Good luck!

Michelle

If you have thrush and are on abx then you likely have systemic candida in my opinion (I'm not a doctor).

2 ND's that I've seen this year say that they love tanalbit for yeast. I was already taking it for another infection so I've just stayed on it since I'm on long term abx and want to avoid having to go off of it to deal with a yeast infection.

Tutu has written many posts with great info about dealing with yeast. You can find them with the search tool.

I've been gathering info about probiotics for awhile now.

The liquid nystatin if it is mixed at the pharmacy is made with sugar !!!!!!!
You might get better at first, but will rebound because of the sugar.
My bottle had a sticker on it "sugar added."

You can get nystatin liquid made by a compounding pharmacy.
