Hi all, A little off topic as it's not Lyme related. My husband had to have a tooth pulled today and the dentist prescribed Flagyl 500mg. It says to take it every six hours, 4 times per day.
Does this sound right? I guess it just looks like a lot in a days time.

I hope he doesn't have lyme!!! Never heard of it being used for dental work.

I didn't find the answer to my question, though. I didn't see anything that talks about dosages.
My husband has been prescribed Flagyl before but never this much. He isn't being treated for Lyme.
How much is usually prescribed for Lyme?

Large antibiotic doses are often prescribed with dental procedures. It's because an infection of the tooth or gums from dental surgery can quickly move to the heart and be fatal.
I dated somebody who had a heart murmur, and he had to take high doses of abx before any dental procedure.

That sounds like a lot to me, too, although my frame of reference is very limited. My 115 pound, 15 year old daughter takes 250 mg twice a day for five days each month. This month we had to stop the pulse early because she developed numbness in her finger. That's the second time that's happened to her on Flagyl. Next month, she's going to take Tindamax instead.

For Lyme I took 1500mg per day for almost 4 months. Yes, please watch for numbness and stop immediately. I complained of numbness in my feet, and it was almost 10 days until they took me off it, now 7 months later I still have severe peripheral neuropathy in my feet, and no taste buds. I guess it's the chance we take it taking so many abx for Lyme....
