Ok... I've been at this for awhile, going on 10 years, and this is the first time I've been on a cyst buster.

Probably a dumb question but the cyst buster, in my case plaquinil, is actually killing the cysts right? It's not just busting them open and letting the spirochetes wreak havoc...

cause I feel awful and it feels like it did prior to ever being treated. Those dim distant days are being relived...

almost makes me think I'd be better off coexisting with the cysts at least when I wasn't busting them I could function fairly well...

It's funny when you're feeling pretty well you actually forget how bad you felt and when your feeling bad you forget what feeling good is like...

Herx? Keep at it?
Thanks for your time and your input
Sue

I'm sorry you're feeling so crummy. This does show that you needed the drug. I don't know how effective plaquenil is at getting rid of the cysts.

In my opinion, flagyl or tinidazole would be much better....but then the side effects are worse too. UGH!

I would rest assured that the cysts are being killed and that is why you're miserable. It's simply a herx reaction.

Plaquenil would hit babs as well, so if you have that particular nasty co-infection, you're getting the "Ol' Double Herx" and NASA will be contacting you for use as a propulsion system for their next Shuttle shot. [Big Grin]

I personally have NO knowledge that plaquenil is utilized as a cyst buster...

I thought it was an anti-inflam...if I'm right then you're doing the wrong stuff....

Get thee on flagyl or tinidazol or metronidazol to bust these cyst guys.

And to do the job right you should be on a spirochetal abx with the previously mentioned flagyl...
Then you'll be assured of killing any of the little buggers that escape the cysts.

I would not do ANY anti-inflams while infected with lyme.

I figured it was actually a good thing!! Thankyou all for your responses and support.

Present protocol is ketek 800mg daily, bactrim twice daily, minocyline 100mg twice daily, plaquenil 200mg twice daily, and mepron two teaspoons twice daily, and lots of supplements

I know LLMD mentioned plaquenil was a cyst buster but perhaps he's trying it also for it's effects on persistent Babs.

I appreciate being able to come to this forum and basically whine a little bit... because nobody else seems to understand... and your many responses let me know that at least I'm heading in the right direction.

So thanks again and I hope you are feeling well
Sue

A 2001 Brorson study shows that Plaquenil (Hydroxychloroquine) actually does both.

I agree that when taking a cyst buster like Flagyl or Tinidazole, you need to be on another antibiotic with it.

No wonder you feel like C***!!!!

Yes, plaq is supposed to work on cysts....but I still don't think it's as effective as the tini and flagyl.

Is Zith a good ABX to take along with the flagyl? Husband is now pulsing bits of flagyl again........just finished his Doxy a couple of days ago.

Still has Zith to take 3x a week. Will that be enough to take with the flagyl?

Thanks!

Why? Never heard this before. My LLND, who has lyme herself suggests anti-inflam's. Got any studies or logical explanation that is backed by anything other than guesses?
Thanks,
Terry

Plaquenil seemed to work for me as a cyst buster. I was on it for about eight months, felt like cr*p the entire time.

I was put on Tindamax with Rocephin and others and felt nothing, good or bad. Did Tindamax for six months.

Back on Plaquenil and know it's hitting hard again but not as bad. [bow]

I'm on tini now (along with rifampin and ceftin) and am having the herx week from hell, so I could really relate to your post and empathize with you.

I pulse the tini a week a month, and that week is always a real horror.

Guess that means it's all working!

I also really understood what you said about forgetting just how horrible things were in the very beginning of treatment -- when my bacteria level was sky high and I could barely walk.

I do forget those times, until this one week, and then I remember.

anyway, I hope you get some relief soon!

Plaquenil is a mild immune suppressor, but it's a cyst buster also, as well as an antimalarial. It's also very synergystic with the macrolides. It allows them to penetrate inside the cell by changing the Ph. It'a a widely used drug for lyme as long as you are on other abx that are killing the lyme. You don't want to take it alone however as that could/would make your lyme worse.
