Hello to all who understand my pain. I am wondering if there is a chance my son could have contracted this through the placenta. If so, what are the chances of it happening? I was not symptomatic at the time. It all came on after giving birth. I have had the disease for about 7 years now. Do I need to and how would I go about testing for him. He is only 2yrs. old and needless to say, I'm a wreck over this. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Listen...don't kick yourself around because of your suspicions.
I am one who can trace symptoms back to my birth in 1950...submission and then either rebit or re-activation due to age or immunosuppresant drugs.
I would imagine that an Igenex blood western blot test would be appropriate for your son.
There are no medical doctors per sey here on lymenet... Just other patients with advice from their own experiences...
there are even less pediatric llmd's (lyme literate md's) that are'nt presently being brought up on charges...
others may come along with help.......zman

Dr P (former president of ILADS) was recently asked that question, and his response quoted in the press. He said that many people in general will test positive, yet have no symptoms. If your child is asymptomatic, he said, do not treat.
I would suggest asking your Lyme-literate doctor what to be on the lookout for in your child, just in case.

Hi donnaindistress. Lyme can be passed through pregnancy and breastfeeding. I suggest having your son evaluated by a Lyme pediatrician. If he is infected, the sooner he is treated the better.
Please try not to worry. It is good you are asking questions and learning as much as you can.

Were you and the baby treated for Lyme while you were pregnant? You are supposed to be on antibiotics if you have Lyme and want to have a baby. At birth, the placenta, cord blood, blood, and urine should have all been checked for Lyme. Were they not checked? Hey there BIG CALIFORNIA BIRD,
I don't think she knew about her lyme till after having had the kid...OR
the hormonal upheaval of pregnancy and childbirth changed her asymptomatic lyme into symptomatic lyme.
