Since starting Ketek a couple of months ago, my gums have been much worse. My dental hygenist asked me what had changed, and the only thing I could think of was starting the ketek/omnicef combo. He had me start using biotene toothpaste and mouthwash, and I use sonacare toothbrush, and floss enough to make my dentist proud!

I read that mangosteen juice has helped inflammed gums and started that--but guess I should check to see if there is any problem with mangosteen juice and abx.

Anyone else have gum problems? Any suggestions? I used to have great teeth and gums--so frustrating!!!! (other abx have not seemed to affect the gums much)

Thanks.

Ann

Well, since I've started antibiotics my teeth/gums hurt all the time. Omnicef and Biaxin seem to cause more pain. I didn't notice the problem when I was on Ketek but I was only it for a couple of months.

You may have yeast or thrush making gums hurt are they bright red?
If so cut sugars out let a few acidophilis take apart melt slowly in your mouth a couple of times a day this will help starve other bacteria out they compete for same food sources.

If its gum pain from nerves take ibuprophen a couple of times a day to bring inflamation down check with Dr though we wouldnt want to overtax your liver since your on ketek.

A friend of mine had this problem on certain abx and it turned out to be a severe folic acid deficiency while on the abx.
Her doc gave her a prescription for folic acid, and her gums were better in 24 hrs.
Your problem may or may not be like hers- but just thought I'd mention it.

been having issues with my gums too.....periodontist told me I have "trench mouth" and prescribed amoxy. He told me none of my lyme abx were targeting this "gramnegative bacteria"......next appt on tuesday.

I 'm worry since my gum receeded a lot in only 6 months.....pryor to the periodontist visit.

Even thought I brush and floss my gums and the taste in my mouth is not right.

Reading over the internet and the manual merck and it say that people with AIDS get this condition and may become sistemic....go figure.....I'll address the issue next appt with LLMD

I am on Ketek too, but it hasn't affected my gums so much as it seems to have completely destroyed my mouth flora. The upside is I have zero plaque -- the downside is that my teeth turned black from some sort of fungus or mold perhaps?

I wonder if the imbalance of mouth flora could be contributing to gum difficulties? I just have noticed that with Ketek my mouth in general has problems whereas the many other abx I've been on haven't had that effect.

(Thanks to Lymenet, I found out that baking soda gets rid of the black gunk, thank goodness)!

I wonder if there's any way, short of gargling acidopholus or yogurt (the logistics of which would be problematic and messy lol), to rebalance the mouth flora. Anyone know?

the same with me, specially the root of my teeth are stained with "black" shadow of film, which I thought was cause by trench mouth.....but I remember having this black stains for a long time a go without gum problems specially on doxy.

The funniest part is that i'm on mino and I found literature that mentions this specific abx as the cause for staining teeth....
