I hope this isn't too confusing, I'm not to with it right now.
Went to my llmd Tuesday and this is what we are doing now.
I am currently taking art 200mg daily, samento 1 dropperful daily. He just took me off ceftin.
Just added in cholestyramine last couple of days.
Starting next week Monday thru Thursday I am to take 500mg flagyl twice daily and fluconazole 100 mg daily for three weeks only.
Also he took me off nystatin. I have been taking theralac, phoschol, thyroid, oramune max, astragulus, and probably more stuff I can't remember.
I am leaving for vacation in 3 weeks and that is why he wants me to stop flagyl, fluco, and cholest.
I did read some old posts on flagyl. I'm a little nervous.
Any advice would be appreciated. I will check back tonight.
Love and thanks to you all. Oh! and Happy New Year.

Well, everyone's different, LOL! I laugh because I posted three days ago about starting Flagyl and being more than a little scared of what it would do after reading horror stories in the old posts.
I'm taking a lot less than you're about to, but I'd like to encourage you not to panic too much. I started on 250mg on Tuesday and am absolutely fine. So fine, in fact, that I'm ramping up to 250mg twice today to see if that causes a herx. I'm supposed to get up to 250mg three times daily.
Search for Flagyl and it'll pull up the thread I started on Monday if you haven't already read it. Best wishes and let us know how you do! Posted by Aniek (Member # 5374) on :
That does seem to be a high dose of Flaygl. I started at 250mg twice a week. But I react strongly to meds.
Is your LLMD easy to get in touch with if you have a bad herx? If not, I would suggest before you start, getting a plan of action allowing you to cut back if it's too much.
We all react differently. But my Flagyl herx hit within hours.

Oh, I also had massive headaches with convulsive vomiting and massive photophobia on FlagyL!!!!!!!
(SOrry if you're expecting a "Just kidding!" but no, I really did!!! But just at the beginning and I have been doing great for years now and would do it ALL over again if I had to to get what I've gotten*)!*)!! Yeah, and it tastes yucky! But oh well!!!!!

KarenB, Sick,
My daughter started flagyl the first week of December. 250 mg three days a week. (she is only 10 to put the dosage in perspective). LLMD said to start with 2 days a week for a few weeks then work up to 3 days. We also started at half the dose the first two days just to be careful of allergic reactions, etc.
This abx seems to have a comulative effect. Day one the reaction is not as bad as day 2 and 3, with day three being the worst. Overall, her reaction hasn't been too too bad. She did feel achey four hours after starting the first dosage. Mainly an increase in muscle pain. A few symptoms from the onset of her illness returned for a few short hours on 2-3rd day. Some eye pain, shortness of breath and real tight calves. These all ended by the fourth (off) day. She has not had any stomach issues with this abx.
It seems on the "off" days she doesn't feel as bad as she did before we started flagyl. So, this is encouraging.
I was wondering how long most people were on flagyl before they noticed a "symptom free" period and stopped. This abx seems to be stonger than the Zithromax she currently takes.
Penn92, I didn't see your post...boy miss one day and you've missed alot. I would have replied to you. Made the appt. for hubby end of the month. Thanks.

I have to comment about this - I asked for the brand name Flagyl rather than the generic. What I got is coated and hasn't given me any problems with taste when I take it. I understand that metallic taste can be a side effect when taking this med, but at least I don't get a nasty coating on my tongue when I swallow it like others have described.
If your Rx plan is decent, maybe you can see your way to taking the brand name. Ninety tablets cost me $45 whereas the generic would have been $10, but I decided to spoil myself! Posted by Robin123 (Member # 9197) on :
Because I'm sensitive to everything, I take anything new rather slowly -- ie, chop it up, take the tiniest amount and then increase the dose very slowly each day. Wouldn't this method of increasing abx help keep a suddenly strong herx from happening?
So this is what I'm doing with flagyl now.

Hi All,
Sorry it took me so long to respond. It's been crazy at home.
First and foremost, thank you for responding so quickly. I am scared to death of a major herx.
I did see my primary care doctor Friday and she said flagyl is tough stuff.
I definitely see a pattern to what I have been reading in past posts and now about starting out slowly.
I think the first few days I will only take 500 mg once daily to see how I do. I am usually quite sensitive to abx. I believe we know our own bodies and what we can handle.
sick, you keep me posted also. I start on Monday so I'll be sure to let you all know.
lymedesign, It is also good to hear that on the off days your daughter feels better. To be 10 years old and dealing with this must be horrible for her and for you as her mom.
I have 3 children myself and if my children ever had to deal with this I don't know what I would do. All my prayers go out to everyone.
