I am just starting back on Amoxicillin after a year and a half in remission. I am also taking Yasmin. Do I need to worry about the effectiveness of the birth control while I am taking the amox? I was on birth control while on Rocephin and it seems there is no risk of a bad interaction there. Any advice would be great right about now...

yes--call your gyn and your LLMD to clarify but amoxy will make the birth control less effective. if you are indeed using it for birth control and not for hormonal replacement, they suggest using back-up methods.

My understanding is most abx make birth control pills ineffective as birth control. They can still help with other things, I take the pill to control cramps and other pain around my period and that works fine on abx.

It seems the OB/GYN doesn't tell you anything.
I got my last beautiful granddaughter because of my daughter taking birth control pills and abx.
I'm happy, but it made FOUR children for my daughter.

Thanks for the advice guys, what a pain! On top of having to pay outrageous amounts for abx that may or may not work, I have this to worry about too. *sigh*

I have a coworker who had her third because she wasn't informed that the pill she was taking will nursing her second was so weak that taking it a few hours late could give a window of ineffectiveness. Surprise!

Hey there. I believe that certain other hormonal methods like the Mirena IUD, Nuvaring, Ortho Evra patch, and perhaps an injectable like Depo Provera (unsure about the last two), are not affected by most antibiotics. Talk to your doctor to make sure, but if I'm correct this may be one less thing you have to worry about.
And...congratulations on feeling well enough to have a sex life ^_^
