Hi all,

My husband developed what looks like a large spattering of small brown freckles -- they are nowhere else on his body, just circling his ankles and the tops of his feet. Kinda like petechiae, only bigger and brown instead of red and not raised at all.

Has anyone else had this as a Lyme symptom?

Thanks,

Alison

Alison, I was just reading up on RMSF - and I think ankles and wrists are where those "spots" usually appear. I hope that isn't it, but it sort of sounded like it is possible.

A few photos here:

Hi Alison,
Thank you for asking this question. Over the summer, I had the same thing, but on the insides of both of my thighs. It spread over 2 days, then slowly went away.

I showed 3 doctors (PCP, LLPsychiatrist,Lyme Friendly Neurologist). No one knew what it was and no one was particularly concerned.

I would like to know, as well, if this is related to lyme or a co-infection.

I had this after the first 3 months of treatment, it broke out for about 3 weeks. It was on the tops of my feet and the shins of my legs. I also had the co-infections of ehrlichia and rickettsia.

My rash the summer of 99 was like the #2 photo but not as pronounced. I've always wondered why I tested negative twice to RMSF when I had the rash to match. Several months ago I was doing some reading on rickettsia and found info that said it is from the RMSF family. So my study leads me to believe ricketsia is one of my co-infections.

My legs, arms, belly and back are covered. Every few weeks I get new pronounced red petecchia spots on my ankles to below my knees. Recently Cave posted some research info on rickettsia that I found very interesting.

Do a search in medical on rickettsia, RMSF or petecchia (sp) rash and you will find alot of reading.

Just one thing I wanted to add...
If they are very different than the ones in truthfinder's link... more flat, tan, like liver spots...

You 'might' want to have him tested run for hep B and C just to rule them out. They are simple bloodtests and doctors don't routinely run them unless asked.

I hope they are something that goes away easily with treatment.

My husband had similar brown spots (like large freckles) on his legs and a little on his arms and back last year.

I've checked out the spotted fever photos but I think those are different. The AP rheumatologist thought they were interesting but had no further insight.

They cleared after a few months. Recently I've noticed a few more on his shins.

I had what looked like brown freckles on the top of my feet and up the front of my leg. My regular doctor did not know what it was. My LLMD said it was hyper-pigmentation probably caused by minocycline. Not saying that's what anyone else has. One way or the other, tell your LLMD especially if you are on abx.

I looked for some pictures of it on the internet and there are MANY different presentations from what I can tell. Mine looked more like this:
http://www.spa-medical.com/Skin%20Conditions_files/image002.jpg

They started out looking like the little red dots but once I started mino they got bigger and bigger and turned brown and looked like big freckles, then they got darker and closer together and I got some on my other foot and leg. I've been off mino for several months and they look better but I still have them. I don't know if they will ever go away.

Thanks everyone. They definitely look more like the photo you posted Terry, not so much like the RMSF photos.

If it is hyperpigmentation, I wonder what is causing it. Hubby is in total denial that he has Lyme so hasn't taken any medications that would cause this.

I'm really befuddled as to what it is, and I want to know in case he has a co-infection that is something I don't know I have.

Thanks again,

Alison
