I was just wondering if you can do yoga/pilates and what exercises you should avoid whilst having a PICC line in? I am having one in next Friday and hope to continue on with my yoga and other exercises!
Thanks

After about 1 week from when my line was put in I started to get more active again. I even did some very easy weight lifting, simple easy curls and arm rasies but that was it. You do want to be very carefull. I would think that you would not want to strech out much along all the muscle groups where the line runs. I did not have any problems.
I had my 2nd line put in 2 days ago and the radiologist said that easy curls and arm raises in my case whould be OK. (I have been very athletic and in pretty good shape considering what the infections have done) But not to do any push ups or bench pressing and to limit how I strech the arm and shoulder.
I am sure many have other opinions.

I was told not to raise my arm above my head.

Hi,
You may want to investigate a BioMat for detox. It is pricey, but while you sleep you detox.

I was told not to carry or put any strain on the arm.

I am. But I am very very careful and do NOT stretch that arm too far.
Because my line came out twice, before i was able to do yoga again, they sewed it into the skin in three places. This has helped this time.

I do. Pilates and yoga. And skiing, but I know none of this is recommended. I've had my PICC line 5 months and no problems yet.

we did, but nothing that stretches that arm, or puts too much weight on it, and nothing that puts you in a position where you may topple over and knock the line.
so.. a restricted programme. you can certainly still do yoga IMO, just keep in mind that those lines can come out and/or shift very easily.

I did yoga but avoided inverted poses and those that required pressure on my arm. I was told no bicep curls or lifting above my head. I was, however, allowed to cycle. I wasn't much of a runner but started when I got my first PICC, only because it was about the only thing I could think of that didn't put pressure on my arm and shoulder. Unfortunately, my perspiration would build up under the bandage - NG. So, yoga and tai-chi were what I did and still do.

I specifically asked both my doctor and my home health nurse and the answer was a definite "NO!".
It's because the physical movements could move the pic line in the vein. I also wasn't allowed to lift anything more than 10 pounds for the duration of IV for the same reason.
It's nice to think the IV is making you well, but there is a high risk of dislodgement and infection (the latter being deadly in some cases!).
My doc said if I wanted to exercise and felt I could......go take a walk and leave it at that.

just as a matter of fact for all you folks doing heavy exercise with a picc in. i actually learned to play tennis with my left hand, although i have played 40 years right handed.
but still this is very important

but still this is very important THE CENTRAL PICC LINE OR STENT GOES IN EXTREMELY CLOSE PROXIMITY TO THE HEART, AND IF PUT IN INCORRECTLY , ACTULLY GOES INTO THE HEART THIS IS VERY SCARY TO ME AND I WAS EXTREMELY CAREFUL AND MINE WAS SUTURED IN. ANY BACTERIA THAT GET IN ALONG OR IN THE PICC LINE WILL GO DIRECTLY TO THE HEART.
IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT THAT THE PICC STAYS HEALTHY, MORESO THAN YOUR BODY IF NECESSARY. THIS IS THE REASON THEY TAKE A FLUROSCOPE XRAY AFTER PUTTING IN A PICC OR CENTRAL STENT.
SO BE VERY VERY CAREFUL AND OBSERVANT AT ALL TIMES OF THE LINE. MY LAST LINE GOT CLOGGED ,COULD REACH ANYBODY AND I PULLED IT MYSELF, FEARING INFECTION.
