My doctor wants to switch me from doxy to penicillin shots. I have been on treatment for four months now and am not getting any better. I am currently on doxy, plaquenil, and zythromax. I just started the zythro a couple of weeks ago, after having a horrible reaction to Biaxin. I am worried about whether or not my insurance will cover the penicillin shots, since my doctor is not my pcp. Has anyone else received this treatment with success, and if so were you able to get the insurance to cover it??
[confused]

Thanks~Be Well.

By Penicilin shots it sounds like your doctor (DR. H. ?) is suggesting Bicillin LA. It's good stuff. Some insurance doesn't seem to blink at it, other refuse. There are ways around that. If we are talking about Dr. H., I'd trust him.
Are you a pug person?

No, he specifically said penicillin shots. So I was curious. He is Dr. H., and I definitely trust him. He said that most insurances cover it if I get it done in a doctor's office. Otherwise, I can purchase a pack of ten shots and have my family and friends give them to me. Obviously I would rather have the insurance cover it. I will probably have to call them directly. As a matter of fact I do love pugs. But I actually happen to have two puggles, which are a pug beagle mix. They are our babies.

When I was little we had a family doctor that was just the best. He delivered babies, gave you medicine right out of his office etc. Sometimes, he only charged you for the medicine.

We always went to him and he would give shot of Pen...We just thought that cured everything and it sure seemed like it did.

I feel pretty confident he was referring to Bicillin LA in its generic name. My reasons are that Bicillin LA is a well recognized treatment for Lyme, especially chronic. It's generic name is Penicillin G Benzathine. Also, Dr. H. is known to prescribe Bicillin LA. I am in contact with several of his patients and all of them have been on Bicillin LA, at least for a while.

I have two pugs, Ivan and Boris. They are GREAT.

People who have done bicillin, what was your experience? How long did it take to see improvement?

I've been on doxycycline for 3 months, and have not seen much improvement either. I just had my first bicillin shot.

I am on Benzathine Penicillin Injections with othe AB's - They are excellent, no pain but I did herx badly for the first 8 weeks (good sign) I would definatly reccomend these as part of you AB regime

I was VERY chronic, at least twelve years, with about thirty of the symptoms on Dr. B's list. That said, Bicillin LA combined with Biaxin has been very effective for me. The herx was pretty bad for several months. I've just stayed on them for four years with no problems. These days, other than taking medicine, I'm basically well. In fact, when a doctor at UCSF looked at my labs recently he commented, that looking just at them, he would say I was twenty years old. I'm almost 57.
