After 20 years of illness, I was just put on ceftriaxone IV. After 6 weeks of treatment, I felt great, better than I have in years. Almost all symtoms went away.

A few days after being off the med, I felt horrible again. My question is, how long can someone stay on ceftriaxone IV? Does anyone stay on it for very long periods of time (or indefinitely?)
Thanks...

I have been on IV Rocephin twice during my treatment. The first time for 12 weeks at 2mg a day. Like you I felt better than I had in years when treatment was stopped.

Unfortunatley I relapsed about 4 months later and was put back on IV this time 4mg a day for 10 weeks. The second time around I didn't have as far to recover so the gains were not as dramatic. I also lost my gall bladder due to the Rocephin but it was a small price to pay to feel so much better.

So to answer your question you can be on it longer than 6 weeks and in your case since you've had Lyme so long its going to take longer to get at all thier hidding places. I know of people who have been on IV Rocephin for as long as 6 months. But be prepared that its really hard on the gall bladder.

Good luck

Thanks for the info. Wow, 6 months! I can't imagine feeling healthy for 6 months. That would be ideal.

Do you think the Rocephin cured you after the second treatment? Well, not cured you but made permanent positive changes?

I think the second round helped a great deal with the Lyme symptoms but I still felt bad. That's when the co-infections the Lyme was hiding showed up which I'm still treating. Like you I keep hoping one day I'll look back and this will be a bad memory but I'm not there yet.

I was on IV rocephin for 6 1/2 months. Also oral doxy.

I made huge improvements on the rocephin. I was very ill before starting it.

3 weeks after stopping the antibiotics, I relapsed. Due to 11 months of C. diff, I am only on bicillin LA which has not been as good as the rocephin/doxy combination.

You need to transition on to orals not just go cold turkey on the abx-!!!!!!!!!! I was on IV 9 months and know peopple wh o have been on 2 years- but you sound like you would have been fine to go off on to strong orals to maintain you- IV has risks- anywayz- glad it worked and it usually does again if it did before!!!!
Take care-
