I am currently toward the end of treatment (2 shots bicillin per week) for a lyme relapse. Symptoms are almost purely psychiatric (had been misdiagnosed as bipolar) but also bad brain fog and confusion.
Last month was the best month in a while. Only felt bad one day, about 2 weeks before period started. Twinges in the lower right abdomen, intestinal discomfort, bad mood swing (agitation).
It is my understanding that when the estrogen level changes around ovulation, the immune system becomes suppressed and lyme symptoms can come on strong. That is what happens to me each month.
Last month it was just one day. This month it has gone on now for about 5 days. I am having discomfort in the lower right abdomen. A pressure and fullness and a feeling of twinges and spasms.
My intestines are really upset and my mood is awful. Taking .025 mg of Risperdal helps with agitation and irritability/frustration.
I have only one ovary left because I lost the other one about 10 years ago to a dermoid teratoma cyst. Perhaps I have another cyst and it is messing with my hormone level, thereby suppressing my immune system and letting the lyme out with a vengeance?
This is an awful, awful feeling. Has anyone out there experienced anything similar?
Maybe if I go on a birth control pill that prevents periods this will all go away?
Thank you!

Dear NoVAChick,
I feel like I am having a herx right before I begin my monthly time.
My periods are shorter now (about 25 days apart), and my Lyme brain doesn't track them well.
It has happened that I wake up feeling like I just got hit by the big Herx truck, and later that day, I start my period.
I have very bad cramps also. But they are not specific to one side.
Could you possibly have a cyst? Is the side that is hurting the one with the intact ovary?
I do have occasional lower abdominal pain, not associated with that time of month.
Sometimes all of my lymph nodes in my groin area are enlarged and that can cause pain also.
Hope you get some relief soon.
Hugs,
Geneal

Hi Geneal, Thanks for your kind response.
Yes, the discomfort is in the side with the intact ovary, and I am starting to wonder if it may be a cyst.
I'm sorry you have troubles similar to this, too.
I'm going to call the doctor Monday. It's bad enough to have the discomfort, but when I am having the discomfort, it makes my mood go wacky too.

Hi. I wish I knew the answer to your question. I too was midiagnosed with bipolar. I also get a lot of agitation at times. My hormones are all screwed up. My thyroid is low and my adrenals are low too. I have developed PMS over the last year - I never had a problem with this before. It's like the agitation just builds and builds and it's awful then I start bawling my eyes out. Then I get my period and my mood is normal again.
My symptoms also were purely psychiatric until the last three years. Sorry to hear you're feeling so sick. I hope you find an answer to your question.

Hi Catwoman. Sorry you deal with this too. Isn't the agitation awful? The lowest dose of Risperdal helps me with the agitation, and I only take it as needed, maybe 6 pills a month.
Today my mood is better, but I am very tired and my intestines are still a mess. I am starting to rethink that the ovary discomfort is upsetting my intestines...
and instead wondering if it is the opposite - that I have intestinal yeast overgrowth and that the wildness in my intestines is making my ovary uncomfortable.
I have had this before and I remember it feeling like this. I am not on any orals - just 2 shots of bicillin per week. But I don't take probiotics.
It is my understanding that Candida can also cause psychiatric disturbances in addition to the bloating and intestinal discomfort.
