I saw a neurologist yesterday. I wasn't entirely hopeful that he would have much information for me, but I went because I do worry about my brain!
He told me that Lyme could cause sciatica when it attacks the sciatic nerve. Hmm. I thought my sciatica was in the category of "not lyme." but otherwise mysterious (no spine problems, no injuries, Been mri-d several times).
And..
Oh **** I'm forgetting (yet another part of this thing).
It was interesting too. Oh well. I'll let you know when it comes to me if it ever does.
It was encouraging to me to read that Amy Tan regained her ability to write -- I had the stupidity that the lyme seems to have blessed me.
Oh, yes, here it is. Doxycycline only crosses the blood brain barrier (at 400 mg daily) when the mininges are inflammed. Otherwise it doesn't.
Anybody heard this? It didn't occur to me to ask how to know if one's meninges were inflamed or not.

I believe it! I have sciatica from time to time. It doesnt' flare as often as it used to and goes away more quickly than it used to....Thank the Good Lord!!
A neurologist that KNOWS something about LYME?? Where'd you find him!!?

Well, yes and no. He holds to the post-infectious auto-immune theory. And he was also the one who I saw for my continuous migraine and couldn't help, and most certainly never mentioned the possibility that it could be lyme.
He said what he most usually sees and treats is Bell's Palsy.
I'm tyring to get into the Columbia imaging study, and so I needed to retrieve my medical records from him, so I thought while I was there I might as well see what he had to say.
I'm glad I saw him -- because my sciatica has come back since being on antibiotics, and I wasn't really sure why, now it's just another herx.
My husband and I are getting ready to walk across town. If it doesn't work out for me, thank gov there are busses.

My nuero symptoms got much worse on abx.
I had Reynauld's stuff and inability to multitask and what I dubbed Septra Stupid.
My symptoms are now steadily decreasing.
I now can grocery shop and cook without getting overwhelmed! Facial numbness and twitch almost gone.
Hang in there.

Karen, I know this is true of Amoxicillin. Crosses when there is inflammation present.
NEVER have I heard that about Doxycycline.

I have had mild headaches and slight fever since starting minocycline last month.
Cautions and side effects In addition to those common to the Tetracycline antibiotics group, minocycline may be used in renal impairment, but may aggravate systemic lupus erythematosus.[1]
Also, more so than other tetracyclines, minocycline can cause the rare condition of secondary intracranial hypertension which has initial symptoms of headache, visual disturbances, and confusion.
Minocycline, like all Tetracyclines, becomes dangerous past its expiration date. While most prescription drugs lose potency after their expiration dates, tetracyclines are known to become toxic over time; expired tetracyclines can cause serious damage to the kidneys.
Minocycline's absorption is impaired if taken at the same time of day as calcium or iron supplements. Unlike some of the other tetracycline group antibiotics, it can be taken with calcium rich foods such as milk, although this does reduce the absorption slightly (by ~5%).
