Always take herbs together with a good electrolyte for better absorption and transport of the active ingredients through the matrix to the cell membrane and into the cell.
Electrolytes activate all functions of the Autonomic Nervous System and improve trans-cell-membrane communication.
I have always been told, as a rule, to take herbs away from food.
However:
Freeze dried garlic, however, should be taken immediately after meals on a full stomach (2-3 caps 3 to 4 times a day) or you can dissolve 2 caps in a couple ounces of water and take it away from meals. Tastes good as drink - we do it whenever viruses make the rounds, etc.
It is best to take garlic away from herbs.
And don't forget lymphatic drainage, moderate exercise, and supporting elimination (KMT or such, colon hydrotherapy). You can't just kill it -- you will have to help the dead proteins out as quickly as possible.
Take care.
